Ella Louise Nichols peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. She made her earthly appearance on October 5, 1949, in Princess Anne County, Virginia, to the late Sarah and Clifton Nichols. Ella was born into a large and loving family as one of ten siblings. Her life was enriched by the bonds she shared with her siblings, though many have preceded her in passing [Anderson, Clifton “Frank” Jr., Darlene, James Steve, and Ronell].
Ella was a 1968 graduate of Crestwood High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. It was during these formative years that she discovered her gift from God and developed her passion for sewing. With more than 60 years of experience, she was known as an elite seamstress and tailor. Ella had a remarkable gift for her custom designs that brought comfort and joy to those around her. The sewing room was a workshop of creativity where she kept her family, friends, or even so-called strangers stylish, warm, and comfortable with her custom clothing, blankets, scarves, bonnets, window treatments, and robes to name a few. She was also known for her dedication to her community as well as one of the best hand dancers from Queen City alongside her generous heart for using the family’s receipt to bake sweet potato biscuits for everyone.
A devout Christian, she became a member of her family’s church, Mount Sinai Baptist Church, at an early age. Ella’s life was grounded in the principles of the Bible, and she was a beacon of light and guidance to all who knew her. Aside from sewing, Ella retired from Ford Motor Company Norfolk Assembly Plant after dedicating several decades of loyal service.
She was the essence of love and support to family members and friends alike. The union between Ella and Jesse Ashby leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion in their children, Dawn and Thomas Quick, and Shawn and Lavone Dickson.
Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren, Dion Quick [Marressa], Gabrielle Dickson, Danyel Dickson-Beverley [William], Malik Quick, Javone Dickson, Lavone Dickson, Jalen Quick and great-granddaughter, Nia Dickson
Ella also leaves behind three siblings who will continue to cherish her memory: Alexis Dee Nichols, Hal Nichols, and Muriel Nichols as well as an extensive number of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-love, and friends. The legacy of her family’s love and unity will endure as they remember Lou’s kind heart and generous spirit. Ella’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith, compassion, and dedication to her family and community.
Her departure leaves a void in the lives of those she touched, but her spirit and teachings will continue to inspire and guide us. As we mourn the loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, faith, and service. Rest in peace, Ella Louise Nichols. Your memory will forever be a blessing.
