Elizabeth McDougal

Sunrise: August 27, 1936

Sunset: October 26, 2018

On the morning of Friday, October 26, 2018, the Lord called our precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, sister, First Lady and friend Elizabeth McDougal home. She was born on August 27, 1936, to the late Jessie May Williams and Samuel McCarter in Ruston, Louisiana, and was one of six children. She was preceded in death by two sisters, the late Bessie Bell Jackson and Mineola Bea, and three brothers, the late Samuel McCarty (aka SL), Sammy Elton McCarty, and Arnold McCarty.

Elizabeth has lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, most of her adult life since leaving her childhood residence in Bossier, Louisiana, where she met the love of her life and was joined in holy matrimony on December 6, 1953, for 65 years to founding pastor of Soul’s Paradise C.O.G.I.C.J. – Texie J. McDougal, Sr, who survives.  She is also survived by ten children (youngest – oldest): Texie J. McDougal Jr, Jonathan McDougal (Shantay), Zeneta McDougal, Anna E. Shabaz (Maafu), Jehoaddan Harris (Rich), Joshua T. McDougal, Michael A. McDougal (Michelle), Neal J. McDougal (Esther), Kenneth McDougal (Davida), Dennis McDougal. Elizabeth was also survived by 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Grands: Katrice, Najee, Ashley, Jonathan, Isaiah, Julissa, Alana, Cameron, Caleb, Teccara, Steven, Aman, Azaria, Cherelle, Alicia, Marcus, Jovan, James Jr, Kierra, Kenjamin, Jenesia, Dennis, Hugo.  Greatgrands: Syniah, Zy’Kieh, Savion, Omari, D’arii, Lennox, Deonte, Omari, Jeremiah.

Elizabeth dedicated her life to the upbringing of her 10 children, being a loving spouse, and a holy-ghost filled Christian.  She was a woman of many talents including, but not limited to exemplary homemaker, advent gardener, 5-star cook, amazing seamstress, crosswords puzzle extraordinaire, great organizer, financial wizard, awesome leader, and scrabble champion. Elizabeth was a strong believer in preserving a strong mind and body by dedicating herself to an active lifestyle and new learning through reading the dictionary and watching shows like “Jeopardy” and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” Her most notable assets were her evangelism, great compassion for those in need, and being willing to help all that came into her presence; even allowing random strangers that knocked at her door refuge on her couch, sharing her family’s home with church members and homeless families found sleeping in their cars, and helping family members that needed help when going through major life events. Everyone who truly knew her, knew that a few of her all-time favorite things to do during her leisure times were watching  “Days of Our Lives,” frequenting consignment/thrift shops and pampering herself.

Elizabeth was adored by her family and friends and was a pillar in the church and community. Being a cancer survivor and beating the odds, living over a year after an ischemic stroke in one of the rarest places it could strike, is a testament to the strength and resilience of this strong woman of God and His power. She always said not to worry about her because she was ready to see Him, as, we know not the day, nor the hour, but be ye also ready. Elizabeth is now resting in His arms and nothing and no one could ever replace the memories and legacy she has left.

There’s magic in a Mother’s touch, and sunshine in her smile. There’s love in everything she does to make our lives worthwhile. We can find both hope and courage just by looking in her eyes. Her laughter is a source of joy, her works are warm and wise. There is a kindness and compassion to be found in her embrace and we see the light of heaven shining from a Mother’s face. I just wanted to let you know my thoughts and my prayers are with you and your family through this heartbreaking time. Nothing I can say will ease your pain but just wanted you to know I am thinking of you. Our heart are saddened by your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mother McDougal was an awesome woman of God! She always had an encouraging word for you anytime. My husband, Elder Charles Norfleet and I would from time to time see her when we were out eating on Sundays; one favorite place, ” C & W Cafeteria in Southern Shopping Center, Norfolk, VA. We last saw her resting in Lake Taylor. She’s in God’s presence! Sleep on Mother, take your rest. On behalf of my husband, Charles “Junny” and myself, my parents, Elder Joe & Mother Martha Vinson, and the Vinson and Norfleet families, I extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Elder Texie McDougal and the entire McDougal Family.
