Edward Richard Elliott, Sr. “Richard” was born on September 10, 1950, in Portsmouth County, Virginia, to the late Olice Elliott, Sr., and Jean Melinda Elliott. Richard received his early education in Portsmouth Public Schools. He was one of eight children, one of whom preceded him in death, Olice Elliott, Jr.
At an early age, Richard gave his life to Christ and rededicated his life to Christ before his passing. He served in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Specialist at Fort Hood, Texas, and was discharged under honorable conditions. Richard was known for his broad range of skills and knowledge across various fields, and he willingly accepted tasks and figured out how any non-working item could be fixed. As a jack of all trades he excelled in areas that were a credit to his valuable blue-collar skills, and his hands-on approach included explaining and teaching others before and as he worked. His ability to identify and repair problems with cars, any other type of machinery, and houses proved that his God-given gifts were shared with family, friends, and strangers. Customers repeatedly depended upon his expertise and advice, and their stories and his equipment collection will always be two symbols of his quality time and talents.
Richard’s larger-than-life attitude was the cornerstone of his personality, allowing him to live with daily enthusiasm, adventures, and ambition. At an early age, Richard was known in his local community as a Point Guard who could handle the basketball and execute a deadly jump shot. His deep love for music and all types of sports was constant and healthily obsessive. From his young childhood through adulthood, his devotion to the Washington Commanders was strong, and it influenced younger family members and friends to develop the same team love. He was a loving husband, dad, granddad, uncle, brother, family member, and friend who cherished many moments and occasions with everyone who was close to him. Family and friends will never forget his infectious smile and carefree attitude.
Richard experienced increasing health challenges over the past few years and passed away on December 29, 2024, at Bon Secours Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Theresa Futrell-Elliott; his children, Edward Richard Elliott, Jr. (Tamika), Lakisha Elliott, Felicia Elliott, Daryl Elliott (Stacy), Shawnese Davis (Terrance), and Shannon Courtney; his siblings, Tony Bazemore (Margaret), Olice Elliott, Jr. (Deborah-deceased), Sharon Elliott Holloman (Robert), Ronald Elliott (Donie), Lloyd Elliott (Donna), Victoria Elliott Redcross (Maxwell) and Virgie Elliott; his stepchildren-Mellody Futrell, Stephanie Wright-deceased), Vickie Futrell, Anthony Futrell, Antonio Futrell, and many grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, in-laws, and friends. Richard will be truly missed, and he will never be forgotten!
