Edward Lewis Brown

Sunrise: November 16, 1943

Sunset: March 17, 2019

Edward was born on November 16, 1943 in Norfolk, VA to Charlie and Nettie Brown. He was one of eight children which included Norman, Peter, Carrie, Willie, James, Franklin, and Nathaniel. Growing up in Norfolk, he attended Catholic School and later transitioned over to Norfolk Public Schools. He loved sports and was a phenomenal football player, which led to him being the first African American in the area to be featured in an article in the Virginian Pilot at the age of 14. He later joined the United States Navy and upon ending his tour of duty, relocated to Washington, D.C. and worked several government jobs. He relocated to New Jersey in 1971. It was there he met Carolyn (Jean) Johnson, whom he married and together they had 3 children: Kyndis, Carlos, and Terrence. Edward was already the father of one son, Edward, Jr. He eventually moved his family back to his hometown of Norfolk, VA due to his transfer to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he worked for many years and retired. Bored with being a retiree, Edward reentered the work force, working several jobs, which included Norfolk State
University where he retired. He loved fishing, sports, and singing. Although he didn’t know the words to any song, he would make them up as he went along and would keep on singing.

Left to cherish Edward’s memory is his wife Jean, his daughter Kyndis Alexander (Billy), three sons: Carlos Brown, Terrence Brown (Felisha), and Edward Woolard (Mona); a granddaughter Yatasia Alexander; five grandsons: Kyndrik Brown, Gregory Peoples, Jr., Shaquan Bethea, Nashon Brown, and LaRay Owens; five bonus sons Jimmy Riddick, Sam Blakely, Victor  Miranda, Michael Barnes, and Kevin Alexander; bonus daughter Angel Parker-Johnson, godson Willie Johnson, Jr., 3 best friends: James Chesson, Jose’ Dendariarena, and Kevin Blondie; 7 special friends: Kevin Harvey, Rosa McDonald, Jeanette Williams, Rhonda Melton, Janice Martin, Carl Worthington, and Sam Richards; one brother Nathaniel Brown; 7 sisters-in-law: Evelyn Onyechi, Patricia Stewart, Shelbra Johnson, Dorothy Williams, Georgeanna Gamble, Gloria Brown, and Rosa Gaines; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins friends and family. The family would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Oncology nurses at the Hampton VA Hospital: Elaine, Patience, James, Kim, and LaTonya; Hope In-Home Nursing Staff, the hospice staff on Compassionate Care, and a special thanks to Nurse Billy Britt and home aide Connie McCann.

Rest in Peace Edward you fought a long hard battle, one day we will see each again. Love, Your Wife Jean
