Sunrise: July 17, 1983

Sunset: February 3, 2024

Earthen Elizabeth Johnson was born July 17, 1983 in Hampton, Virginia to Mrs. Joyce V. Johnson and Dr. Melvin R. Johnson, both residents of Suffolk, VA.  She was the youngest of three siblings and resided in Pennsauken and Cherry Hill, New Jersey for the past 19 years.  On Saturday, February 3, 2024, our beloved Earthen was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 40 after a brave 3-year battle with colon cancer.  She passed away peacefully at her parent’s home surrounded by the love of family.

Earthen was educated in the York County, Virginia Public School System graduating from Grafton High School in 2000.  She received her BA in History and American Studies from the University of Virginia in 2004 and her JD from Drexel University Kline School of Law in 2011. Earthen’s career started with the Teach For America organization where she taught 3rd grade in Camden, NJ and was a Program Director.  After law school, she became an Associate with Drinker, Biddle, and Reath LLC in Philadelphia specializing in Securities & Corporate Finance. In her most recent job, Earthen served as Associate General Counsel and Vice President at Macquarie Investment Management. She was also an adjunct law professor at Drexel University where she taught the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Seminar.

Baptized at an early age at Zion Baptist Church in Hampton, VA, Earthen led a very active and vibrant life. She enjoyed yoga, reading, college & national sports (especially UVA!), spa days, and adventurous travel. Earthen served on the board for several organizations serving the youth and was a Trustee on the UVA Young Alumni Council. She was also a proud member of Chi Omega Sorority Inc. where she served as House Corporation Board Co-President of the Beta Alpha Chapter at U Penn.

I 1st encountered Earthen while I was a mail clerk at Drinker. She was a source of inspiration for me, particularly as a black woman lawyer, and it was amazing to see her so respected by her peers at such a prestigious firm. Jumping 5 years later, now as a paralegal, I felt a welcoming familiarity when her name resurfaced as a fellow staff member & Drexel alumna!
Earthen was a notable influence in my professional life in a serendipitous way, and it’s truly been a pleasure to work with her. I pray your family receives comfort knowing that she touched so many lives, and is now in peace.
