Earnestine Jennings Harris, 65, was born on April 13, 1955 in Chesapeake, Virginia to Alexander Jennings and Pecolia Jennings, and lived in Norfolk for most of her life. She transitioned from a life of labor to reward on August 13, 2020. She was a Granby High School graduate in the class of 1973.
Earnestine went on to pursue a career as a hairstylist and cosmetology instructor. She was able to make a comfortable life for herself and her children. She loved people and would give anyone the last of whatever she had. She even gave away hair services when she knew she was in need herself. She was the epitome of motherhood and loved her daughters every day of their lives, with action.
In 1984, she converted to Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism, and became a devoted member of Soka Gakkai International. Early in her practice, she was appointed a district leader and encouraged many members in faith through her compassion and care. She learned that “Winter never fails to turn to Spring,” and she raised her two daughters teaching them to always remember this when life gets tough. Her message to them was to be kind even when it hurts. She instilled her strength, love and determination in them.
As a member of the Norfolk Chapter of the National Beauticians Association, she received her Doctoral Degree in Cosmology and was an instructor. At her passing, Earnestine coowned E & J Selective Salon with her sister, Jackie, for over 22 years. She had been a caring and dependable hairstylist for 36 years. She loved to work out and became a certified personal trainer and won a bodybuilding contest. Earnestine had a passion for dancing any electric slide and loved getting together with her family who she cherished.
She was predeceased by her beloved youngest child, Sadena Jennings, who she never got over, and by her favored and devoted bonus father Jasper Gorham, and Aunt Goldie Mae Person.
Left to cherish her memories are her mother, Pecolia Gorham, Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Rodrica Smith; granddaughter, Dazje’ Smith; great grandchildren, Jayden and Cali; 5 sisters, Mildred Williams (Augustas), Barbra Jean Moss (Robert), Mary Adams (Billy), Cynthia Jennings, Jackie Nelson (Gregory); 4 brothers, Leo Jennings (Jeanette), Ezra Jennings (Regina), Marvin Gorham (Sharon) and William Wood (Michelle); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was an extraordinary woman who left a legacy of caring deeply for her children, her family and the person right in front of her.
