Earnest R. Blanchard

Sunrise: March 27, 1950

Sunset: January 14, 2024

Earnest R. Blanchard was born March 27, 1950 in South Hampton County. He was the son of Charlie H. Blanchard and Nettie E. Sheppard. He attended elementary and middle schools in Chesapeake, VA; and he graduated from Crestwood High School. After graduating from high school, Earnest joined the United States Air Force in 1968; and in November of 1988, he retired with 20 years of honorable military service.

Earnest will be remembered for his gentleness and love for people. He never met a stranger. He loved mentoring people and making everyone he encountered feel special. He had a love for sports, (football and basketball) and a love for hats.

“Jug” was his childhood nickname growing up. He was very quiet and enjoyed drawing artwork. When he joined the military, he went by “Doc” Blanchard. He then married his hometown sweetheart, Cynthia A. Dunston, in June 1971; and from their union, they had two daughters and three sons.

Precious memories will linger in the hearts of his loved ones; wife, Cynthia A. Blanchard of Portsmouth; two daughters, Angela D. Dirden (David) and Tujuanna M. Johnson; and three sons, Earnest R. “Junie” Blanchard, Michael V. Blanchard (Mellie), and Darryl M. Blanchard(Laura); sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Onella Nicholson (William), Jeanette Williams, and Sandra Blanchard-Sanders (Rickie) all of Chesapeake, and predeceased by Virginia Basnight of Portsmouth; three brothers, Charlie H. Blanchard (Gloria) of Stone Mountain, GA, and predeceased by both James H. Blanchard (Jacqueline) and Terry J. Blanchard (Phyllis), all of Portsmouth; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Earnest’s soul has now returned to the glorious source from whence it came. He will definitely be missed but his memory will live on.
