Earl Young

Sunrise: September 5, 1944

Sunset: January 18, 2022

Earl Young was born to the late Dorothy Young Harris and Waverly Peebles, Jr. on September 5, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia. God peacefully took him home on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.

Earl’s formative years were spent on his grandparents farm in Greenville County, Virginia, as well as with family in Manhattan, New York.   After graduating from high school, Earl began his military service in the United States Army in 1966. His duty station for basic training was Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina; upon completion of his training, he was deployed to Vietnam.  Earl was honorably discharged from the military in November 1967, and later took up residence in Manhattan, New York.

Earl was employed by the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City where he worked in the transportation department.  His many years of dedicated service, along with his work ethic resulted in his promotion to supervisor of the department.  Earl had a real fondness for the “Big Apple,” and remained in New York several years after retirement.

Earl relocated from New York to Portsmouth in 2015 with a vibrant spirit for adventure. He was in his element engaging in all family activities, trips and gatherings.  He was delightful, kind, caring, and generous- always anxious to contribute when he was participating in any event.  Though not feeling well, he was determined to join his cousins for the annual Christmas Eve Family gathering in 2021.

Earl experienced many health challenges in his retirement years, but he was a fighter who never gave in.  He endured each setback and somehow made a comeback.  Shortly before his passing, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when the invitation was extended by Rev. Alvin R. Rooks, Sr.  His life down here has ended, but his new life in heaven has just begun!

Earl was preceded in death by his father, mother and two brothers.  He leaves to cherish his memory:  one sister, Audrey Pitt of Norfolk, VA; five nieces:  Regina Bonds (Jeffrey) of Elizabeth City, NC; Tia Harris of New York City; Ramona Pitt of Hagerstown, MD; Ronda White of Oklahoma City, OK; one nephew:  Ronald  Pitt of Martinsburg, WV;

special cousins: Eveline R. Garrett of Chesapeake, VA; Hurley Peebles, Jr., Hurley Peebles III, Alfred Rooks, Rev. Alvin R. Rooks, Sr., William Rooks (Beryl), Jester Smithwick and John Smithwick III, all of Portsmouth, VA; Belinda Peebles-Washington of Cucamonga, CA; Michael Well (Angelus) of Skippers, VA; Wayne Wells (Doris) of Chesterfield, VA; Evora Wingate of Portsmouth, VA., and a host of other cousins and friends.
