Robert Morton Treherne, Sr., MD, fondly known as “Bobby” passed away on January 2, 2024, after a long battle with Frontotemporal dementia. Robert was the youngest of four children born to Carr Alfred Treherne, MD and Thelma Morton Treherne. He was born at Ft. Monmouth, NJ on February 22, 1955, but spent the first two years of his life in Honolulu, Hawaii with his family. Returning to Nashville he attended The Tennessee State Nursery School, St. Vincent de Paul and Father Ryan High School. During this time, he became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Bobby met his wife Katherine “Kathy” Ashhurst in the fifth grade where they were classmates at St. Vincent de Paul. They eloped the day after Kathy’s eighteenth birthday on June 26, 1973 and were married happily for thirty-seven years. Bobby and Kathy attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During this time their first child, Annyce, was born. He and Kathy were accepted as early entrants to Meharry Medical College and moved back to Nashville. He and Kathy received their medical degrees in 1980 from Meharry Medical College where they established a scholarship fund for deserving medical students. He completed his Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. During that time Robert “Bobby”, Jr. and Leslie were born. In 1985, he and his family moved to the Tidewater area of Virginia, which happened to be a Treherne ancestral home. Here John, the youngest in the family, was born.
Robert was a board-certified Obstetrician Gynecologist whose private practice in the Hampton Roads area spanned over twenty-five years. He was a dedicated physician whose kindness and love for his patients were without limit. He was a member of the National Medical Association, The Guardsmen, and Chi Boulé.
His family was the most important part of his universe. He and Kathy worked hard and spent time following each of their four children to practices, games and activities. Bobby and the children rode on the boat to fish and ski, they swam, and learned the lessons of life. They were a family. Bobby was that rare, fortunate person who always followed a strict moral compass and reaped the benefits of love sown in his children. During these last years, he has been loved and surrounded by his four children and nine grandchildren, who supported him as his brain fell victim to disease. He lived with Annyce, Thomas “Junior” and their children Justin and Savannah until the very end. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Dr. Katherine Ashhurst Treherne and his brother, Mr. Carr Alfred Treherne, Jr..
He is survived by his children: Dr. Annyce Treherne-Burrough and her husband Mr. Thomas Burrough, Jr., Mr. Robert Treherne, Jr. and his wife Mrs. Alison Treherne, Dr. Leslie Treherne-Fayton, and her husband Mr. Charles “CJ” Fayton, Jr., JD and Dr. John Treherne; nine grandchildren, Justin Burrough, Savannah Burrough, Sean Treherne, Skylar Treherne, Channing Treherne, Sterling Treherne, Mason Fayton, Bryson Fayton and Cason Fayton; sisters, Mrs. Betty Treherne and husband Mr. Anderson Harris, Mrs. Thelma “Tee” Treherne and husband Mr. Robert “Bobbo” Daniels; sister-in-law Mrs. Linda Talley; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to extended family, Mr. Martin “Marty” Walton, IV, Bobby’s longtime caregiver, who provided loving care for many years up until the moment of Bobby’s death.

January 11, 2024 at 4:57 pm(on behalf of Mr. John Ashhurst)
Dear Family:
It is of great heaviness of heart that I learned of the passing of one of my dearest, smartest, kindest family members. In addition to being a great guy, he was also a parental mentor. I had hoped that some cure would have come along, that would ameliorate his situation but it wasn’t to be. I will continue to keep he and Kathy in my thoughts and prayers. My apologies for not being able to attend the service, since I just recently returned from a three year surgical rehab.
With great love and respect.
