Dortha E. Anderson

Sunrise: August 20, 1953

Sunset: January 13, 2021

Dortha Elisse Anderson, affectionately known as “Umpa”, was born on August 20, 1953 to the late Robert Lee Anderson, Jr. and the late Odessa M. Anderson in Norfolk, Virginia. She is pre-deceased by her siblings: Barbara Aminta Anderson, Michael Warren Anderson, Robert Ellsworth Anderson, Jennifer Lorraine Anderson-Chrisp, and Cheryl Elizabeth Anderson.

As a child, Dortha began developing her character as an individual of compassion, dedication and commitment. She attended Liberty Park Elementary School, Ruffner Junior High, and graduated in 1972 from Granby High School. After graduation, she earned an Associates Degree from Kee’s Business College and worked at several retail stores, including Roses and Woolco. Her career path led her to Norfolk State University (NSU), where she worked with Auxiliary Enterprises and Campus Police. After 30 years of service at NSU, she retired from the position of Dispatcher Supervisor in September 2015.

Dortha met Mr. Leon Allen in 1968 and from this relationship was born a daughter, Vicki Lissette and a son, Victor Leon.

Dortha was a truly giving soul who took care of everyone she met. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, and was baptized in 1988, and has always remained dedicated to God and the local Church. She was a member of Gideon’s Riverside Fellowship, under the leadership of Dr. Milton A. Reid; and New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church, Rev. Clyde L. Doxey, Jr., Pastor. As a dedicated member of New Covenant, she served in various capacities: Church Clerk, The Voices of New Covenant, and the Missions and Women’s Ministry. She loved her pastor and church family dearly and was a willing and active supporter wherever needed.

Dortha was known for her God-given creativity and talent in designing birthday, holiday, retirement, and church cards, programs, bulletins, and obituaries. She loved to see her clients light up when she presented them with the finished product. She never asked for anything in return.

Dortha leaves to carry on her legacy of love: daughter Vicki Lissette Pearson of Dunwoody, GA; son Victor Leon Anderson (Malissa) of Powder Springs, GA; grandchildren Tru Anderson, Noah Stovall, Lake Stovall, Forrest Stovall, Kashmir Thomas, Elijah Thomas, Lyberti Thomas; siblings Kevin Anderson (Ellen), Keith Anderson (Natalie), Darryl Anderson, Wilford Anderson, Geral Collins (Tony), and Myra Patterson (Joseph Jr.), all of Norfolk, VA; Manya Brown (Charles) of Dallas, TX; and Albert Chrisp (Tywanna) of Baltimore, MD; a bonus daughter, Angela Hammond; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended relatives and friends, including her best friend Marcia Threats.

I am extremely sad to hear about the passing of Ms. Dot. She will be greatly missed. She was the smiling face I saw when I joined New Covenant and no matter what she always smiled. I love her heart and will truly miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her children and family.

      To: Dortha Anderson’s Family

May God continue to bless all of you and to keep that outstanding “family unity” intact and ongoing.

I knew Dortha from my work in Athletics and hers in the Police Department. She was a stern, by the rules type of person, but with the warm, giving personality that made you feel comfortable in your dealings with her. That big smile of hers would accompany that personality and her decision to help you – whether it was YES or NO!

She gave of herself unselfishly. She loved her family immensely. She also loved her faith and her church.

Rest in peace my dear friend. You’re with your Father now.

Pain and heartache comes to us in inexplicable ways. There is so much each of us must endure in this life. Although, it may feel insurmountable, as each of us bears it in our own unique way, we know that there is one who understands. One who laid down his life, conquered death, can wipe away our tears, forgive us for our sins, and make us new again. Only He truly understands for He is the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus, we ask for your blessings on behalf of the Anderson family.
