Dorothy Virginia Hicks, affectionately known as Virginia by friends and family as well as Dot by co-workers, was born on September 30, 1930 in Winston Salem, NC. Daughter of Walker Ivey and Geneva Hill, Virginia graduated from high school at the age of 16 and attended Kate Biddings Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for one year. She held many positions in her career such as City of Norfolk Fire Department Dispatcher, Farm Fresh Supermarkets Cashier and Front-End Supervisor and Virginia Beach Walmart Super Center Greeter where her infectious smile made everyone feel welcome.
A member of First Baptist Church South Hill, Virginia loved the Lord and family meant more to her than any other aspect of life. She often remarked “I have the best children in the world!” Widowed at an early age, she raised her children as a single mother. Virginia was honored that all four graduated from college. She instilled strong work ethic and respect in her daughters and son. A lover of all sports, Virginia was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and favored the game show Jeopardy. Virginia’s faith in God and prayer kept her blessed through her lengthy illness. Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 14, 2019. She was pre-deceased by her parents, two brothers, Lewis Ivey
and Jimmy Ivey, one sister, Almette Ivey, two sisters in laws, Lois Dinah Garrison and Robbie “Bo” Garrison.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving, caring children: one son, George Bernard Garrison, Sr. (Sheilda) of Bloomfield, CT, three daughters, Gail Garrison Brooks (Paul) of Portsmouth, VA, Vickie Garrison Gay (Rex) of Chesapeake, VA, and Dell Garrison of Baltimore, MD; six grandchildren, Tracee Garrison White, Jermaine Johnson (Holly), George Garrison, Jr. (Laschone), Matthew Garrison (Katrina), Jason Anderson (Michelle) and Mathew Mensia; 8 great-grandchildren, Cleo (CJ), Cameron, Aaron, Ashley, Maya, Evan, Brianna and Olivia; 2 sisters Ann McPherson and Almetta Ivey both of Charlotte, NC and one brother Edward Ivey of Brooklyn, NY; in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,
shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
