Dorothy Spruell Moore, affectionately known as Dot, was born April 26,1936, in Oak City, North Carolina to the late Amos and Arrena Spruill. Dorothy received her formal education in the Martin County School System. Dorothy was married to Earnest J. Moore, Sr., for 44 years and to their union, three children were born.
Dorothy was a stay-at-home mother and after her children were older, dedicated her life to service to others as a private housekeeper and an avid volunteer. Dorothy worked for the late Honorable Judge Edward L. Ryan, Jr. of Norfolk City Courts and his family. Dorothy gave endlessly of her time to her church, St. John’s AME Church, as a church soup kitchen volunteer. Dorothy also served St. John’s AME Church as a dedicated member of the Uptown Fellowship Group, Stewardess Board #2, and the Nannie C. Phelps Women’s Missionary Society. Dorothy also volunteered with the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team program where she went out into the community to serve hot meals to the homeless until her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Dorothy was known for baking cakes for others and was famous for her banana pudding that many raved about. Dorothy also enjoyed flower gardening in her yard during the spring, completing word searches, jigsaw puzzles, and playing Bingo at Suburban Hall until her health no longer allowed her to drive. When she relocated to John Knox Towers, Dorothy enjoyed “managing” the puzzle room where she spent endless hours with other residents who instantly became her friends as they enjoyed completing puzzles and their Tuesday sub sandwich day and Friday crab day, which she looked forward to every week. Many of Dorothy’s completed puzzles were framed and now hang in the hallways of John Knox Towers for all to admire.

    Grand,

Girl, I sure miss you so much. My phone hasn’t rung all week and I keep looking for you to call me and chit-chat every day. This is my new reality. I wouldn’t want you to come back to this cold world anymore anyway. Thank you, God, for my Grandmother and the life, legacy, and lessons she provided me. I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you forever and a day, Grandma.
