Dorothy Mae West

Sunrise: December 19, 1939

Sunset: November 26, 2024

Dorothy West was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 19, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Howard and Adel Hunt. Dorothy West, known to some as “Dot,” was a beautiful person inside and out. Dorothy attended Portsmouth Public Schools and graduated from I.C. Norcom. Mother of eight, and always available for each one of them. Those who she encountered considered her their mom as well, always welcoming anyone who came across her path. She was a diligent worker and displayed that while working at General Electric, R & R Uniforms, and Household Finance. After retiring, Dorothy continued that caring role by looking after several elderly people, up to the point of her illness. Dorothy was a very spiritual woman. She symbolized her dedication to Jehovah by water baptism in 1963. Dorothy enjoyed spending time at the Kingdom Hall, teaching others about Jehovah (field service), and attending assemblies. Just spending time with her spiritual sisters and brothers made her complete. Society only got a taste of how big her heart was, but her children felt it every day. Our mother will be missed beyond words. Dorothy enjoyed family, cooking, baking, and shopping on HSN. If you knew her then you had the opportunity of eating her pineapple upside-down cake or her fabulous banana pudding. Along with her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Tommie West, and sister, Sandra Whitehurst (sister). She leaves to cherish her memory: her children: Darnell Brown (Sheila), Colette Smith, Tommie West (Angela), Phyllis Jenkins, Dave West, Rodney West, Dollie Griffin (James), and Tina West; siblings: Herman Hunt (Geraldine), Cedric Hunt, Jeanette Hunt, and Patricia Monroe; an incredibly special niece, who cared for her to the end, Angela Hunt; 22 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Dear Family,
As we all say farewell to our beloved Sister Dorothy Mae West, I find myself reflecting on the cherished memories we all have of her. She was not just one of the neighborhood moms; she was a safe haven for all of us—a warm presence who welcomed us with open arms and filled our afternoons with laughter and joy.
Growing up, I felt an unbreakable bond with her and your family. My brothers, sister, and I spent countless afternoons playing at what we affectionately called “The ditch.” Those carefree days, filled with adventure and laughter, are precious memories I hold close to my heart.
Even during my years in California, I never forgot the love and support we experienced from Sister West and her family. Now that I’m back in Virginia, I had hoped to reconnect and share in those joyful moments once again. But today, as I navigate this loss, my heart aches for you all.
Sister West’s love and spirit will continue to surround us, and the bonds we formed in our childhood will never fade. Please know that my love and thoughts are with each of you. I will treasure the memories we created together, and I am forever grateful for the time we shared with Sister West.
    With all my love,
    Phyllis Ferguson

I know I only feel a portion of the pain of losing such a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister. Dorothy brightened the day of all who knew and loved her. She was my big Spritual Sister and kept me in line. I can’t wait to see her in the New World to come and hear her say ” hello Collier” again. Deep heartfelt comfort to you.

Sending my deepest condolences to the family. Dot was a very special woman whom I have much respect for. Saying goodbye to someone as special as she is in many hearts is hard to do. She will be missed by all and my heart hurts for the family’s loss. Hold each other tight and know she is with the Lord Almighty now and you will see her again. Stay strong for each other as that is what she would want you all to do. My heart hurts for your loss.
