Dorothy L. Mills

Sunrise: July 25, 1935

Sunset: January 18, 2021

Mother Dorothy Louise Mills affectionately “Doris, Dot or Lil Doris “received her wings on Monday, January 18, 2021.  She took her flight from this earthly realm. Mother Mills was born to the late Lucy J. Sykes on July 25, 1935, in Amelia County, Virginia. Later her mother moved to Portsmouth. Va. where she remained a resident of Portsmouth, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her three sons; Ronnie Giles Sr., Wilbur Giles, Bernard Giles and granddaughter Chiquita Giles.

She attended Portsmouth Public Schools. In 1967, Mother Mills became Pastor Emeritus Taft Purkett’s first member of Macedonia COGIC in Portsmouth, Va. She served as the following: Church Mother,  Senior Choir President, Mother’s Board President, YPWW President and teacher, VA 2nd Jurisdiction State and District Hospitality member, Macedonia COGIC Hospitality President, Vacation Bible School Teacher, and State Mother’s Board President. Mother Mills was faithful in many areas of ministry; however her gift was hospitality, “she loved to serve”. Mother Dorothy Mills was known for her Sunday rolls. People throughout the neighborhood (Jeffery Wilson Park) would come to the house just for her homemade rolls, sweet potato pies and fried chicken. Mother Dorothy Mills provided childcare for social services as well as childcare for the neighborhood residents.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of  her children: two daughters, Darlene Redditt (Daryle), First Lady Brennell Baker(Pastor Ronnie Baker), three sons; Brendell Mills (Teri Ann), Samuel Mills (Cathy), and Lamont Mills; one brother; Windell Giles Sr. (Zethly); nineteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mother Mills will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

To Mann, TJ,Dion, Angie, and the rest of the Mills/Giles family. I extend to you my most heart felt sympathy. You were blessed with a phenomenal mom and grandma. She Was with you during your times of triumph and your times of sorrow. She would want you to keep your hands in God’s hands and trust that he knew what he was doing when he took her home.
