Doris Mae Boykins

On Friday, March 10, 2023, The Lord dispatched an angel to escort Missionary Mother Doris Mae Washington Boykins, 99, from labor to reward.  

She is predeceased by her husband, Marcus E. Boykins Sr. and son Sandy Boykins, leaving to cherish her memory: Marcus Boykins, Jr. and wife Charlotte; Glenn Boykins; Vernell Lamb; Malcolm Boykins; Mary Boykins; Delores Boykins (wife of the late Sandy Boykins), and a host of family and friends.

Mother Boykins was born August 29, 1923, the second of ten children to George and Malinda Jane Washington in Pitt County of Greenville NC.  Mother Boykins had to stop her education to help her mother provide for her siblings and assisted in building a home from the ground up with brick encasement, in the Rosemont Community of Norfolk.  On January 10th 1946, she and the late Deacon Marcus E. Boykins, Sr. were married.  To this union was born six children.  As a wife and mother – with determination, she enrolled in the Booker T. Washington High, night school curriculum and received her High School Diploma, April 14th, 1966.  After her children were self-manageable, she began employment with various companies until successfully receiving was employed with Defense Commissary Oceana VA Beach VA until her retirement.  

Following her devout praying mother’s footsteps, she joined Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, faithfully serving on two usher boards, under the pastorage of the late Dr. John R. Gray.  This became her love and passion along with teaching and expounding The Word of God.  By divine purpose and destiny, she was led of Holy Spirit to The New Bethel Church of God in Christ, Inc., VA Jurisdiction #2/Norfolk District around 1966.  Believing in respecting divine order, she was officially released by Dr. Gray and began serving under the pastorage of the late Elder Nathaniel Lee Wrenn.  There, her ministries of ushering, teaching The Word of God, and Kingdom services were developed and expanded.  Mother Doris Boykins faithfully served local, district, state, and internationally, a combined, 30 plus years in the following capacities and/or auxiliaries:  Sunday school Teacher, Missionary/Evangelist Board, Usher Board (President), Mother’s Board (President), Pastor’s Aid Committee, We Twelve Committee, State Captain (Rally of States) Tea; and received many commendations for outstanding service.  After her pastor’s death in 1995, she faithfully served under the pastorage of Elder A. D. Lillard after his interim and official installment March 31st 1996.                           

In the summer of 2012, through much prayer and discernment, Mother was led to Lamb and Lion Worship Center under the pastorage Elder Lemuel Eaton after burying her late husband, Deacon Marcus Boykins, Sr. two years prior.   There, at Lamb and Lion Worship Center, she continued ministry as Church Mother serving with The Ministry of Anna until becoming homebound.  She loved her pastor, first lady, her church family; and they loved her.  

She also leaves behind; very precious spiritual children, Apostle Ernest Vaughn; Mrs. Carolyn Eaton; Elders Alonzo/Annette Coleman; one sister, Mrs. Jean Holly; two in-laws, Mrs. Earnestine Burrell and Mrs. Amy Washington; Grandchildren, Great-Grands, Great-great grandchildren, cousins, relatives and friends.

    We have known them for a long time. Ms. Doris was good friends of Clyde & Rosabell Gray & Others. What a Jewel. A beautiful woman delights the eye; A wise woman, the understanding, a pure one the soul. God bless everyone.
    Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. The Angels has excepted Ms. Doris as a Centennial lack of 5mths. RIH 🙏🙏

    My prayers and condolences to the family I lived a couple doors down from them on riverside dr , me my sister tootsie, mary and thea would always be around I remember ms Boykins as someone who always loved the lord that’s something I noticed about her , what a wonderful way to be remembered we were at her house a lot , to the family look to God for comfort and strenght , Ms Boykins I know you’re resting peacefully with our father in heaven

    To Burdie, Mary and all the Boykins family.
    As Children of the Rosemont Community, we have known Mother Boykins all of our lives. We know Miss Doris was loved and respected as a wonderful neighbor. She was a holy woman of God who was full of wisdom and knowledge. Miss Doris was a friendly lady who was always willing to share whatever she had neighbors and the church. She was truly a door keeper for the Lord; blessed with the gift of hospitality.
