Doris J. Evans was born on July 21, 1939, to Kenneth C. and Viola Jeffries in Norfolk, Virginia. On March 6, 2025, God called her name and took her by the hand.
Doris attended public schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1957. While in high school, she was crowned Miss Homecoming. She went on to attend Norfolk State University for two years before beginning her career with the United States Postal Service. Doris married the love of her life, Bernard Claudius Harrison, in July 1958, and together they built a beautiful family. They lived a harmonious life and had four children until his untimely passing in 1969.Doris’s desire to raise her children in a loving, stable environment and to be closer to her immediate family led her to move to Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1969.
Doris was a lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk until later in life when she joined First Baptist South Hill in Portsmouth. Doris was a member of several organizations, including Toastmasters and the Red Hat Society. She was a great cook and welcomed everyone into her home, where countless hours were spent with laughter, delicious food, and fun. She loved exercising (especially walking), line dancing, traveling, arts and crafts, and enjoyed many activities, including planning reunions for her Booker T. Washington Class of 1957.
Always ready for an adventure, Doris was a friendly, compassionate, and nurturing person who had several lifelong friends with whom she enjoyed spending time.
After several years as a widow, Doris met and married Clinton Evans in 2004, and they remained together until his death in 2021.
Doris was truly devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Melinda; her grandson, Robert; and her granddaughter, Lauren.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Bernadette Bennett (Charlotte), Kim Turner (Reggie), and Bernard Harrison (Bridget); her grandchildren: Kirstin, Morgan, Bradley, and Brooke; her great-grandchildren: Lanaiya, Keithan, Kyan, Aiden, Kaylin, Ava; her brother George, as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.

March 11, 2025 at 11:19 pmKim and Family It is really hard to say goodbye to our love ones. Death leaves heartaches that no one can heal. Love leaves memories that no one can steal. So, as you all are missing Mrs. Doris think of the great times you all had together, the love you all shared, the many serious talks that you all had, and the list goes on and on. Ms. Doris was my hero and a special lady. She will live forever for the many sweet memories you carry in your hearts are embedded there forever. Lean on God, your faith, and on each other. God will definitely continue to walk with you all in days and months to come. So sorry for your loss; we carry her always in our hearts.💕

May the memories of her continually blossom in the gardens of the hearts of her family, friends and others who loved and admired her. Tears may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning… She’s with Jesus Christ now and is smiling down from Heaven. Rest in peace, sweet Doris… I’ll see you again…
