Doris Daughtry

Sunrise: September 14, 1931

Sunset: October 21, 2023

Doris J. Daughtry was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on September, 14, 1931, to the late Willie and Louise Parker.  She was united in holy matrimony to Herbert J. Daughtry Sr. on January 19, 1951.  She remained married to him until his death on August 31, 2015.  She was an active member of New Hope Church of Christ for most of her life.  She served as the church’s treasurer and was considered the “mother” of the congregation.  In more recent years, she participated in their daily service calls, opening and closing each service with prayer.  Her dedication to maintaining her personal relationship with God and her dedication to her church was an inspiration and shining example to those who knew her.

Doris was blessed with three children through her union to Herbert Daughtry, Sr.  In 1951, Herbert  J. Daughtry, Jr., in 1953, Paul A. Daughtry, Sr. and shortly thereafter Paulette Daughtry.   She loved sewing garments for herself and Paulette and made many beautiful quilts that she gave to others.   Anyone who knew Doris knew she had a love of music.  She sang in the Virginia Opera Guild for several years as well as the New Hope Church choir.  Doris also thoroughly enjoyed word search puzzles.  She could often be found with a puzzle book and pencil in her hand, chewing her favorite bubble gum, looking for that “last” word.

Doris Daughtry departed this life on October 21, 2023.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Parker, Sr, and John Parker, and three sisters, Emma Lawton, Mary Perry, and Vivian Granger.  She is survived by her three children, Herbert (Jean), Paul ( Arlene), and Paulette, her grandchildren Herbert III (Lashawn), Yolando, Nikiba (David), Paul Jr. (Michelle), Andre (Melissa) and Terri, her great grandchildren Jameca, James (Maddie), Kevhan, Olivia, Kayla, Victoria, Mya, Christian, Andre Jr, one great-great grandson August, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Doris leaves behind a legacy of wonderful memories, and she will be sorely missed by her family, friends and everyone who met and knew her.  Rest in peace; our beloved Mother Doris Daughtry.  We love you.

Your Mother loved Portsmouth Senior Station. My Wife and I had the pleasure of sitting with Her at the same table when ever She was there. She did not do a lot of talking. We met Her when Senior Station reopened after COVID. II believe that I was in Junior High School with Her Herbert. May the family continue to look to Jesus for strength. He will see You through this. I leave with You this scripture John 14:1-6
