Doretha Williams Grinnard was the seventh of 13 children born to the late Theodore and Ethel Gilliam Williams. She grew up in Southampton County, VA, which was a rural area where family values, church and love were highly regarded. She was a member of Bryant’s Baptist Church, Courtland, VA.

Doretha ventured into adulthood after her graduation from Southampton County Training School in 1959. Her first job was in New York at Federbush Looseleaf Binding Company. It was there that she met the love of her life of 64 years, Thomas Grinnard. Doretha and Thomas became parents to three beautiful daughters. She enjoyed being a dedicated mother and wife as she continued working and was devoted to achieving a successful life. Her employment included over 20 years with the City of New York Department of Social Services. Additionally, she worked for Estée Lauder Companies, Inc. for over 20 years.

Doretha became a cherished member of the First Baptist Church of Deer Park, where she held esteemed roles including President of the Usher Board, Nurses Unit, and Pastor’s Aid. Her leadership and dedication were invaluable contributions to the congregation.

When Doretha and Thomas retired from their jobs in New York they moved back to Virginia. She decided to seek employment in Virginia where she worked for the Chesapeake Public School System. Upon their move to Virginia, Doretha and Thomas joined Union Baptist Missionary Church, Suffolk, VA.

Doretha was a devoted and committed member of various ministries within the church community, including the usher board, food hospitality services, and Sunday school. Her unwavering dedication was exemplified by her completion of the ‘One Year Through the Bible’ class. Additionally, she served dutifully as a valued member of the Pastor’s Aid ministry.

At the forefront of Doretha’s life was her love of God, family and church. Family was everything to her and she was everything to her family. She has spent numerous hours sitting by the beside of relatives even sometimes when she was not well.

Doretha will be remembered for her love of God, and family, her hard work and dedication to achieving excellence in everything she did. She will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her infectious and warm smile lit up any room she entered. You knew that when she affectionally called you “Darlin” that meant you were special.

Doretha’s endeavor was to always bring joy, peace, and love into whatever situation she found herself. She loved to have fun.  Doretha and Thomas enjoyed going on vacations and cruises with family and friends.  She loved collecting pictures.  Many of these outings were captured in photographs and maintained among her many pictures of family. Doretha enjoyed preparing culinary creations, indulging in shopping excursions, and adorning herself with elegant hats for her attendance at church services.

Ultimately, the happiness of her family was paramount. Doretha exemplified the finest qualities of life and portrayed them in a manner that made her the epitome of a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was loving, compassionate, strong, and full of wisdom. She imparted those qualities in her day-to-day life with family and friends. Her children and grandchildren were constantly showered by her relentless love. That love and guidance was instilled in them and will, without a doubt, be with them and guide them through their journey in life.

My sincerest condolences to Ms. Toni and family on the passing of Mrs. Grinnard. I only knew Mrs. Grinnard for just a short while, but I felt this closeness to her immediately when I met her for the first time. She was such a vibrant person, friendly, caring, and so loving to the those around her. Her smile was infectious and she would always brighten my day when I would see her twice a week. She and Ms. Toni loved to eat the candy at the front desk, I always would sneak both of them handfuls of candy to stash in their purses before they left the clinic. Tuesdays and Thursdays will never be the same. The last time I talked with Mrs. Grinnard she had complimented me on my shirt (as she always did) she and Ms Toni were on their way out and she said to me “I really love your top”, and I told her it was my ANGEL top and I lifted up my arms as the sleeves spread out as if it were angels wings flying. She has taken those wings and is in Gods hands now! So here is my moment to say, how much I truly adored you Mrs. Grinnard, you will forever be in my heart and I am truly going to miss you dearly!! May you forever rest in peace. Love Denise Richardson (Ivy Rehab Spine & Aquatic Center)
