In Loving Memory

Deaconess Dollie Johnson was born Dollie Juanita Baxter on March 15th 1928 in Mamie, North Carolina to Arthur and Robana Baxter.  She graduated from Currituck County Training High School in 1945 and married her high school sweetheart and love of her life Deacon James E Johnson, Jr on August 30th, 1947.  Eventually they settled in the Tidewater area and together raised a family of three children in Portsmouth.

She was a stay- at- home Mom for many years before pursuing a career in government at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.  She retired after 31 years of service.

She joined New Mount Vernon Church in 1960 where she served faithfully as a choir member and deaconess for several years.  She was also a long term member of Eastern Star, Brighton Light Chapter 118.

She was predeceased in death by her parents, all eleven of her siblings, one granddaughter, Cherie Robinson and a great grandson Phillip Williams, Jr.  Left to cherish fond memories are her husband of 74 years James, her three children, Carolyn Dowtin, Chesapeake, LaBarbara Robinson and James III both of Portsmouth, nine grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, an “adopted daughter Joyce Smith,” and friends.

Her wish for us would be to please try and not mourn for her physically leaving this Earth.  Rather to try and rejoice over all the blessings and 93 years of a good life the Lord bestowed upon her.

Dear Aunt Dollie, you are the last of the Baxter sisters and our last aunt. We will miss you so much. You were always supportive and showed up in good and trying times. We could always depend on Aunt Dollie and Uncle James. Our love for you will remain in our hearts forever. We take solace in knowing that, “…to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord….” You were God’s faithful follower here on earth so we know you are with Him now in Heaven.

Rest in God’s loving comfort, Aunt Dollie. Your presence in Heaven is well deserved. (Kiss Mama Elouise for us.)

“Hold Back the Night” was one of the first solos I heard Deaconess Dollie Johnson sing. If not the first, one that touched my heart deeply. The storms are still raging and the devil is still busy, but God gave Deaconess Johnson strength to fight and to do His Will.
He taught her how to pray and live rejoicing everyday! She loved the Lord, and you could “see” this everyday by the way she studied His Word, believed His Word and “lived” His Word. Another anointed NMVBC singer has answered the call to Heaven! “Listen” as the angels whisper that Deaconess Johnson is now in God’s Arms! To the Johnson Family, we pray for your strength and peace. With deepest sympathy and love.

Deaconess Johnson was a Woman with Class and Dignity, who represented God to the highest, with the way she lived her life , singing songs of praise, praying and sharing God’s Words.
Family, be encouraged for Deaconess Johnson fought a good fight and now is resting with the LORD. May God give each of you peace and comfort during this time. Love always.
