The Cut of Life

Derrick Deshawn “Boogie” Rountree  46, went into his eternal rest on Thursday, June 24, 2021.  Derrick was born to Maurice Sawyer and the late Paulette A. Rountree-Hopkins on January 12, 1975.  He was educated through Norfolk Public Schools and received a certificate in Culinary Arts from Tidewater Community College. He was a self-trained master barber who took pride in his craft as he serviced many in the community. He was naturally talented in music and artwork.  During his high school years, he was a proud member of the highly recognized singing group Harmony Swing.  Derrick recently discovered a talent for writing.  Before his untimely passing, he was actively working on his first book.

His spiritual journey first began as a young boy at New Life Chapel Church under the leadership of now Bishop Carl J. Vann, Sr. During his teenage years he joined The Way of The Cross Church (WOTC) where he continued to grow spiritually.  He used his gift of singing as a member of the WOTC choir.

Derrick was loving, tenderhearted, and passionate about his family.  He was loved by all and easy to befriend.  Derrick never met a stranger; if you were his friend, you were his family.  Staying connected to his loved ones was especially important to him, he never left your presence without saying, “I love you.”

His loving mother, Paulette A. Rountree-Hopkins, his beautiful aunt, Carletta Henderson and his grandfather, Paul Rountree, precedes him in his journey to rest.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Onrico Bennett, Onrionte’ Bennett, and Onrishe’ Bennett.  Also, he leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted grandmother, Sarah F. Whitaker; his father, Maurice Sawyer; two sisters: Tracy Williams and Cecelia Rountree-Payne (Eugene); three loving aunts: Wanda Rountree, Sharon Sawyer Ware, and Teresa Cowell; five uncles: Alton Rountree, Kelvin “Shoney” Rountree, Sherman Rountree, Corneilous Sawyer, and Hinton Lee Sawyer; a special nephew, Ethan Payne: and a host of cousins, family, and friends who love him dearly.

    Derrick I miss you so much. You never realize the jewel in your present life until it’s gone. You showed your love daily to me. A hug, a smile and saying “I love you auntie. You rest in Jesus and I’ll see you again in our eternal life. To your dad, Maurice and your grandmother Sarah and family hold on to God u.nchanging hands. God got this situation. Don’t worry. I love you all.

    R.I.P. Derrick. Still can”t believe this has happened. You have always been there to checkup on me and Breshauna (little mama). And to say”I love you” sis every time u called and even if I fussed you out. I’m still waiting to hear you yell “SIS” when I walk outside. Ur brother sends his love. Rest up Buddy. Everyone will miss those devil eyes and your heart of Gold.

    We are never prepared to loose someone that we love so much. That’s why we must love each other while we are alive to say I love you , to give a hug or a wave. I pray that God will bring you peace and comfort. When you think of Derrick and all the love and joy he shared with us remember the beautiful, handsome, good young man who made an impressionable impact on all of our lives. In your grief be still and know that God is who he says he is………Praying For you!

    To my friend Derrick. Words cant begin to explain how i feel right now. I was scheduled to get me and my son hair cut. I had plans to go down memory lane to our singing days. You were always one of the most humble and soft spoken people i know. I love you my dude. Sing those songs of love and happiness till we meet again.

    To the family – Earth has NO sorrow that Heaven cannot heal…
    My heart mourns in this loss of life… Even though I’ve only known Derrick for 2 months, I knew him to be a responsible, quiet and humbled soul. As his landlord – he never gave me a moments trouble… After learning my love for popcorn; he would frequently say, “Momma, I got something for ya”. I always said, Derrick, be careful as I watched him ride off and he’d reply, “I will momma”…
