“You have fulfilled the task that was set before you. You are now resting in the arms of the Lord. Well done.”

Dennis Lawrence, Jr., known affectionately as “Junie” to his loved ones, entered eternal rest on November 30, 2024, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, surrounded by the love, warmth, and prayers of his devoted family. Born a twin on May 30, 1945, in North Carolina to the late Dennis Lawrence, Sr., and the late Lula Mae Lawrence, Dennis began life with a profound strength of spirit. Though his twin sister passed at birth, Dennis carried both their lights throughout his remarkable journey.

Raised in Portsmouth, VA, Dennis attended Portsmouth Public Schools, where his early years were shaped by a strong sense of family and community. As a young man, his adventurous spirit took him to live in New York City and Boston before returning to his roots, where his life’s greatest achievements and contributions would unfold.

Dennis served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1972, including a tour in the Vietnam War. He endured the hardships of combat with unwavering courage and was wounded in service to his country, earning the prestigious Purple Heart. His sacrifice and valor symbolized a deep love for his homeland, and his steadfast spirit inspired all who knew him. Dennis’s membership in the Disabled American Veterans organization reflected his lifelong commitment to honor, duty, and brotherhood. He was rarely seen without his signature cap, a humble yet proud emblem of his military service.

In the words of George Washington, “He who wears the military order of the Purple Heart has given of his blood in the defense of this homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen.” Dennis embodied this truth. Despite the physical challenges he faced, he remained a symbol of resilience, teaching us to rise above adversity with grace, dignity, and an indomitable will.

Dennis retired from the Newport News Shipyard after 30 years of service in June 2007. He was a gifted, highly respected, and skilled welder. His expertise and meticulous work earned him numerous accolades, reflecting a career built on integrity and excellence. Yet, his talents extended far beyond his occupation. A “can do anything” spirit defined his life, from fixing cars and completing home-improvement projects to generously lending his skills to anyone in need. Whether as a mechanic, mentor, or Good Samaritan, Dennis delighted in giving of himself to others, finding joy in acts of service.

For over 50 cherished years, Dennis shared his life with his loving wife, Jacquelyn. Together, they built a family rooted in love, laughter, and faith. They were blessed with a daughter, Kimberly, and two grandsons, Khalil and DJ, who were the pride of Dennis’s life. A devoted father and grandfather, he immersed himself in their lives, cheering them on in sports, band performances, karate lessons, swimming lessons, and school activities. Dennis was not just a supporter but an active participant, volunteering at their schools and becoming a beloved figure among students and staff alike. For that reason, he received awards of appreciation for his dedication and service.

Dennis’s favorite pastimes painted a picture of a man full of life and enthusiasm. He enjoyed dining at his favorite restaurants, fishing, bowling, listening to old school R&B music, and going on road trips. He was a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan, steadfast in his loyalty no matter the season. Action movies, especially those featuring Bruce Lee, were a source of entertainment and inspiration, and his love of martial arts led Kimberly to earn her black belt. His hands-on approach extended to rebuilding racecars and creating lasting memories through shared experiences with family and friends.

Dennis’s faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and inspiring others. He believed in the power of service, kindness, and sharing God’s love through his deeds. His giving nature and selfless love were reflections of God’s light, and his legacy is a testament to living a life of purpose and grace.

Dennis leaves behind a legacy of love, giving, and acts of kindness, cherished by his wife Jacquelyn; daughter Kimberly; grandsons Khalil and DJ; cousin Annette “Wanda” Body (Julius) of Newport News, VA; sisters-in-law Beverly Taylor of Atlanta, GA, and Brenda Keene (James) of Portsmouth, VA; brother-in-law William Watkins of Baltimore, MD; and lifelong friend Joseph Johnson (Joycelyn). He is also survived by a host of beloved family members (i.e. nieces, nephews, and cousins), and dear friends and neighbors who were touched by his warmth and generosity.

Though his physical presence will be deeply missed, Dennis’s spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who loved him. His laughter, wisdom, and steadfast devotion to family and friends will continue to guide us. As we bid farewell, precious memories will sustain us until we are reunited with him in the presence of the Lord. His life was a gift, and his legacy will endure.

Rest in peace, Dennis Lawrence, Jr. You have run the race, fought the good fight, and finished well.
