Delores Banks, 88, passed away at home on Monday, October 28, 2024. Delores was born on June 21, 1939, in Norfolk, VA, to the late Mary Williams Hughes and Luther Askew. Delores attended Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She finished several classes that focused on the Old and New Testaments.
She began her career as a substitute teacher at Campostella Elementary School. She was a lifelong member of Norfolk’s St. Mark UCC Church. She was a member of the St. Mark UCC Church’s Senior Choir, a member of the Norfolk branch of the NAACP, a loyal member of the Beacon Light Civic League, a member of the Voices of Norfolk, which was led by Mr. Frank Felder and she spent many years working at the voting polls. She was a member of Elizabeth-Fragrant Rose #34 and a member of Silver Spring Organization for many years. After receiving her preaching license and ordination, she gave her trial sermon at the Faith Temple Church under the direction of Rev. J.B. Williams. She preferred to help her husband with his career rather than pursue her dream of becoming a Nurse.
She was fond of singing gospel songs, hymns, and anthems. Making bread pudding for her husband and family was something she loved to do. She loved to play a variety of card games, watch family feuds, and hand dance with her husband, George.
Delores is survived by her daughter, Cheryl; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Hawkins and Beverly Kelson; adopted daughter, Sherry Harold (Gregory), adopted son, Bernard “Pee Wee” Thompson (Juanita) Cheryl’s special friend, Robert Mustafa; sister-in-law, Louise Banks and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Delores was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Banks, and her son, Edwin (Ricky) Banks.
