David Neil Barrett was born on April 22, 1982, at Broward Health Medical Center, 1600 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Ms. Eileen Rowe Barrett and Mr. Sylvan Barrett. Affectionately known as “Big Dolo,” his early childhood was spent in Tamarac, FL. David was raised in a Christian home. He was a member of the Nova High School [Davie, FL] Step, AAU Basketball, and AAU Soccer teams and graduated in 2000. David served in the U.S. Navy from 2000 to 2005; achieved the rank of E-5 Yeoman 2nd class petty officer, served on USS Harry S. Truman CVN75 in Operation Enduring Freedom in Kuwait; and as an active Reserve from 2008 to 2011. His career included: City Furniture Associate 2005-2007, Zephyrhills Water 2007-2008, Tamarac, FL, and most recently as a Kecoughtan High School security guard and football coach. David’s favorite foods included Jamaican oxtail, curry goat, jerk chicken, Italian, and Mexican cuisine. His hobbies included coaching high school football, weightlifting, outdoor recreation [beach, parks, etc.], Hebrew spiritual music, Jazz, reggae, old-school rap, and bible study. He was known for being the life of the party and warm and welcoming to others. His previous marriages produced children with: Ms. Christel Cooper, 1999-2010 [son Christyan], and Ms. Shameeka Breedlov, 2011-2018 [son Elijah, daughters Hadassah and Shamiyah], and he also produced a son, Benyamin, with Ms. Gloria Goiry. He was devoted to his children. After online studies introduced him to Israelite culture in 2016, Big Dawid attended congregation C.O.Y. (Children of Yisrael Open Hands Ministry) in Newport News, VA, from 2016-2025 and served as the head of security. He reclaimed his Hebrew heritage and began using “Dawid,” the Hebrew version of his English name, which means “beloved” or “favorite.” Dawid worshiped on Shabbath, studied Torah, financially supported and developed his community through outreach and advocacy that expanded C.O.Y. membership to include Torah only and Messianic Hebrews. Dawid’s spirit returned to the Most High on February 19, 2025. Dawid ben Yisrael was preceded in death by: brother Otis Barrett. He leaves behind to honor his memory and continue his legacy: parents Ms. Eileen Rowe Barrett and Mr. Sylvan Barrett; sons – Christyan Barrett, Elijah Barrett, and Benyamin Barrett, daughters – Hadassah Barrett and Shamiyah Barrett; brothers Orville Barrett, Carl Barrett and Christopher Barrett; sisters Melinda Pusey, Olivia Barrett and Richelle Direny; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and other family members. It is with sadness I express my sincere condolences to the Barretts family of passing of my nephew David. If can say one word to describe him I must say he is a fighter. David you are missed and you can never be replaced. Your time on earth was so short but rewarding. I will never forget those long telephone conversations we usually have the jokes we share and the discussion on family matters. David you will be missed. My nephew until such time. Your uncle Rockey
