David A. King, Jr.

Sunrise: July 25, 1942

Sunset: March 22, 2021

David Armstead King, Jr., aka “Junie King” or “King David” as he was affectionately called by family and friends, transitioned this life on Monday, March 22, 2021 after a brief illness.

David was born in Norfolk, VA July 25, 1942 to Geraldine F. and David A. King, Sr. He was the loving brother and second to the oldest of five siblings: Jeanne K. Giddens (deceased), Viola Ann Dooms (Wauna), Pamela Jackson, Jerald King (deceased; Lee), and Juanita King.

As a child, David was an active member of First Baptist Church-Bute Street. His formative years were spent at Liberty Park Elementary, Ruffner Jr. High, Booker T. Washington High School (Class of 1960) and later Virginia State and Rutgers Universities. Upon graduation from college, “Junie” sojourned to Vietnam, serving his country proudly as an Army officer and reservist. Throughout his life David always operated from a place of integrity. He believed in hard work and playing by the rules. These traits certainly served him well over the remainder of his life. As his military career came to an end, he soon married his life partner, Brenda, and set out to establish himself in the corporate world and as a family man.

David was soon accepted into the Management Trainee program at Virginia National Bank.  As time went on he survived many mergers of the bank over the next 24 years. He rose through the ranks as Assistant Branch Manager, Minority Affairs Officer, Commercial Loan Officer, Assistant Vice President, Vice President, Sr. Vice President, Executive Officer, Venture Capitalist and eventually President of Sovran Funding Corporation. We now call this place Bank of America. He wore so many varied hats as Director of Virginia Beach Development Authority, Director of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce and Director of the Virginia Small Business Finance Authority. His community service endeavors were exemplary; lending his tireless efforts to chair the Norfolk Azalea Festival, The United Negro College Fund, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, United Way and WHRO. He also served on the Boards of Norfolk Academy and RBC Centura Bank.

Upon retirement from the bank David lent his services as a freelance financial consultant to Sentara and other corporations for a number of years. In 1999, he acquired MobileVac Services Company and enjoyed the role of entrepreneur until his second retirement in 2008.

In his leisure time, David was an avid music enthusiast and athlete. At any time he would regale guests about his passions: music, politics and sports. He enjoyed rigorous tennis and golf workouts with friends and family.  Entertaining friends and closing deals on the tennis court were two things that he loved dearly. He played as hard as he worked. When guests came to call they would always be greeted with that signature toothy smile, melodious notes filling the house and lots of laughter.

Today we honor him, celebrate him and pay homage to the wonderful legacy he has left for so many. We are so grateful and thankful for his life and his love.

David is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Brenda King; daughters, Erika Edwards and Errin Boyd (Faheem); grandchildren, Erik Conyers, David Edwards, Kyle Boyd and Harper Boyd; nieces and nephews, David Giddens, Kimberly Martin (Danny), Lance Giddens (Rozlyn), Mark Dooms, Monica Davis (Wesley), Jarrod King, Danita King, and Ashley Jackson, as well as a host of loving cousins and extended family.

David and I were high school classmates and closest of friends. Most memorable were our teenage years as members of the Ambassadors social club and teaming up as “water boys” for the BTW football team…..[what better way to travel and see the world – smile]. I will dearly miss my brother for so many reasons. But I know now, he’s with God and deservedly rests in peace.
