Our Beloved, Darrell
“Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One”- Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Motto
Darrell Keith Rodgers, 67, passed Friday, October 8, 2021. He was born March 26, 1954, in Portsmouth, VA. Darrell was pre-deceased by his parents, Albert “Shoptop” and Delores Griffin Rodgers.
He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, then graduated from Churchland High School in Portsmouth, VA, where he was a standout Varsity Football player. Darrell, lovingly called “Sweet Chickey Baby”, continued his football career as a Viking at Elizabeth City State University, where he also pledged Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. After graduation, he served four years for his country in the United States Army.
Darrell dedicated 20+ years to the United States Post Office. He proudly wore his uniform, working tirelessly to exceed standard deadlines to demonstrate exemplary service. The Norfolk-Church St. Branch was without a doubt his 2nd family.
Not only did he work hard, but he played hard! He would light up a room with his laid-back, joking manner and deep laughter. Other than his family, friends, and work, the one thing that he truly loved was playing B-I-N-G-O! Setting up in his favorite places throughout the week.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Troy Darrell Porter, Sr. (Robin), three grandchildren, Kiara, Brianna, and Troy, Jr. Other survivors include his “bonus” daughter, Carmen Franklin; his Aunts: Helen Summer and Ida Mae Griffin; Brothers: Ernest Rodgers (Angela) and Andre Cummings; Sisters: Denise Miller, Patricia Beckford, Pearlie Cummings, Angela Lee Cummings, Ernestine Rodgers, and Matleen Wortham; dedicated companion, Holly Jean Barner and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
