In the stillness of a winter afternoon, the heavens opened to welcome home a cherished soul, Darlene Joann Jewell, who departed this earthly realm on Thursday, December 26, 2024. Born on July 23, 1942, in the heart of Longview, Texas, Darlene was the seventh of ten precious children born to the late Lucious and Vivian Odessa Newhouse. Her life was a symphony of love, devotion, and steadfast grace, each note echoing the richness of her journey.
As a young girl, Darlene journeyed with her beloved mother and siblings to Wichita, Kansas, where she would blossom into a woman of remarkable strength and integrity. A proud graduate of Wichita’s East High School, Class of 1960, she forged a path of industrious excellence, contributing her talents to esteemed institutions such as Navy Exchange Procurement, Bazaar Inc., and Creighton Military Uniforms. Ultimately, she fulfilled her professional calling as an entrepreneurial military clothing sales representative, leaving an indelible mark on all she encountered.
On December 28, 1960, Darlene entered into a sacred union with her high school sweetheart, the love of her life, Robert W. Jewell. Together, they embarked on a lifelong journey of devotion and partnership, nurturing a love that withstood the tests of time. As a devoted and dedicated Navy wife for 20 years, Darlene embraced the challenges and triumphs of military life with grace and resilience, offering unwavering support to her husband’s service and creating a nurturing home wherever their journey took them. Their blessed union bore three beloved daughters: Daiquiri Jewell, Monique Anderson, and Derricka Corbin. This year would have marked their extraordinary 64th year of matrimony, a testament to their enduring bond.
Darlene’s vibrant personality and dynamic spirit were evident in every aspect of her life. She was a true social butterfly with an infectious energy, a sharp wit, and a feisty charm that drew people to her. Known for her love of laughter and her ability to forge deep and meaningful friendships, she brought joy to every gathering. Darlene’s hobbies reflected her zest for life—she was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, a passionate reader, and a lover of games like Words for Feud, Bid Whist, and Pokeno. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, macramé, dancing, and planning unforgettable parties. A talented cook and entertainer, she delighted in bringing people together. Her faith, resilience, and generosity were unmatched; she was a prayer warrior, a natural leader, and a devoted matriarch who embraced her family and friends with open arms. Whether traveling, dressing elegantly, or competing with a playful sense of trash talk, Darlene lived life with intentionality, strength, and grace.
Her radiant legacy lives on through her devoted daughters: Daiquiri Jewell, Monique (Frank) Anderson, and Derricka (Darrell) Corbin; her treasured brothers: Alex Newhouse and Virgil (Rita) Newhouse; and her dear brother-in-law, Craig Barnes. She delighted in the blessings of her cherished grandchildren: Latoria Boone, Elise Hillman, Robert Hillman Sr., Frankie (Tiffany) Anderson IV, Jewell Boone, Brianna Anderson, Ahmore Anderson, Darrell (Assia) Corbin Jr., and Desirae Corbin. Her joy was further multiplied through her adored great-grandchildren: Robert Hillman Jr., Aaliyah Arnold, Auston Johnson, and the soon-to-arrive Aubree Joy Johnson.
With a heart expansive enough to embrace many, Darlene shared a special bond with her adopted son, Lamont Arnold, and her beloved niece, Regina Newhouse. Her legacy extends to a host of devoted nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends, all of whom were enriched by her luminous spirit.
For 48 years, Darlene graced her Camelot subdivision home in Chesapeake, Virginia, creating a sanctuary filled with warmth and love. Surrounded by her devoted daughters in her final moments, she left this world as she lived her life—bathed in the love of those who cherished her.
Her memory is a treasure, her life a testament, and her legacy an eternal flame. Rest now, sweet matriarch, in the arms of the Divine, where your soul shall shine evermore.

January 5, 2025 at 10:55 amDaiquiri, Monique, Derricka…..our deepest condolences go out to you and the entire family. It is hard to find the words that can help take even some of the pain away during this storm! But you can find comfort and peace in Gods word and his promises: “Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal”; “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”; “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”; Weeping lasts for a night, but joy comes in the morning”. His love endures forever….just as yours/ours will, for your beloved Mom. We all will miss her but some great day we will see her again! Love y’all….our prayers are with you! 🕊️❤️🙏
