Cynthia D. Sykes

Sunrise: May 22, 1962

Sunset: February 17, 2020

On the evening of February 17,2020 at the age of 57, Cynthia Sykes was lying in her bed at Virginia Beach General Hospital looking in her daughter’s eyes while holding her hand as she was called home to be with the Lord.

She was born on May 22,1962 in Portsmouth, VA to Arthur Teartt (deceased) and Sylvia Teartt. Cynthia was an amazing daughter who loved her parents dearly. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Lloyd Sykes.

Cynthia spent many years working as an independent private duty nurse’s aide. In addition to her nursing profession she owned a professional cleaning service. Her passion was caring for others. She was a compassionate nurse’s aide that took pride in the way that she cared for others and it showed. Many families were blessed to have her care for their loved ones. She often became very close to the many families who considered her “family.”

She had a big heart for the elderly, for children, for the widowed, for the lost and those left behind. The Lord anointed her healing hands and selfless heart. She wasn’t just a professional caregiver who went above and beyond the call of duty, she cared for many family and friends as well. She was always willing to help in every way possible. She was also an awesome cook. The family always anticipated her good food for the soul.

Above all, Cynthia was a dedicated and loving mother. She loved her one and only daughter with all her heart. She was her #1 cheerleader. She celebrated every milestone, accomplishment and embraced every moment they shared together.

Cynthia especially loved her role as “Wawa”. The name her only granddaughter “Bailey” affectionately called her when she was too young to enunciate grandma. Bailey wouldn’t let anyone else call her Wawa, “Wawa.” They shared a very special bond. She was an amazing, beautiful grandmother whose greatest joy was making memories with her granddaughter.

She leaves to cherish her memories and continue her legacy of love her daughter, Darlene Brown (Michael); granddaughter, Bailey Brown; mother, Sylvia Teartt; siblings, Camilla Teartt, Christine Fitzgerald (Jimmie), Sheila Todd (Paul), Joseph Teartt (Shanell); aunt, Yvonne Lavergne (Leon); nieces and nephews, Tyren Johnson, Monique Teartt, Loren Jackson (Karimah), Brandon Sharpe, Paul Todd Jr., Caleb Teartt, Tyler Teartt; great nieces and nephews Alexus Johnson, Nyla Johnson, Jaelyn Harris, Gabrielle Jackson and Jameson Palmer. She also leaves a host of other family and close friends who will miss her dearly.
