Clifton Lee Smith, Sr. was born on April 13, 1928 in Northampton County, Virginia (The Eastern Shore) to the late Dora Jackmon Smith and Governor H. Smith. Clifton received his education in Northampton County Public School System. At an early age, Clifton moved from the Eastern Shore and made Norfolk, Virginia his residence.
He was married to the late Betty Hawkins Smith, until her passing on September 12, 1997. Clifton was a very hard worker. He was an employee of Hampton Roads Sanitation District from July 9, 1956 to January 12, 1989. He also worked part-time at the 7UP plant in Norfolk from the late 70’s to early 80’s and after he retired, he began to deliver furniture for the Dump Furniture Company on weekends for more than 10 years. He always stayed bust cutting the grass and other yard work up until last year.
Clifton leaves cherished memories of his life with: his sister, Mamie Morris of Machipongo, Virginia; two sons, Dennis Hawkins, Sr. of Cincinnati, Ohio and Clifton Smith, Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia; daughter, Sharon Smith–Rayner of Norfolk, Virginia; eight grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and host of other relatives and friends.
