Claud M. Johnson, Sr., 94 transitioned to his eternal home on March 28, 2021 after succumbing to multiple terminal illnesses at his residence. He was born December 9, 1926 to the late Claud and Carrie Johnson in Gates, NC. Claud was predeceased by five brothers: Clifton, Wallace, Raynor, Philmore, and Allen and one sister, Sue and son-in- law, Johnnie E. Simmons. Once Claud moved to Virginia he settled in Norfolk, Virginia where he met his wife of 72 years, Isabelle Spencer and they later moved to the Cavalier Manor section of Portsmouth in 1957.
Mr. Johnson was an active member of New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a trustee and member of the Male Chorus and Food Bank Ministry until his health began to fail. Mr. Johnson was also a member of the Portsmouth Branch, NAACP.
Mr. Johnson retired from the Naval Supply Center, Norfolk in June 1992 with 40 years of service as a GS-9 electronics technician. He sold hundreds of Johnson Publications (Jet and Ebony) in Portsmouth, primarily in Cavalier Manor, encouraging reading and self-knowledge of Black America. He also worked part-time as a waiter and banquet assistant at the Moose Lodge on George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, VA for several years.
Left to cherish his many memories are: his wife, Isabelle; their four children, sons Claud Jr. (Carole) and Carlton S. Johnson, Chesapeake, VA; daughters Connie L. Johnson and Yvette J. Simmons, Portsmouth, VA; three grandchildren: LaTonya Price Richardson, Mitchellville, MD, Carmica (Lee) Green, Jacksonville, NC and Carla R.
