Clarence Eugene Holmes, Sr.

Clarence Eugene Holmes, 82, departed this earthly life on September 27, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.  Clarence was born on January 9, 1942, in Princess Anne County, Virginia to Theodore Holmes and Mildred Cuffee.  Clarence is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Andrew Holmes and Willie Holmes.

Clarence enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and remained in the service until 1967. After leaving the Army, he took a position at Yorktown Naval Weapon Station.  In 1968 he married his beloved wife Dorothy Sykes and from that union produced two sons and a daughter.

Over the years Clarence worked various jobs and participated in many activities most notably, driving buses for Hound Dog Bus Company and Chesapeake Public Schools.

A dedicated Mason, Clarence was a Past Master of the South Hill Lodge #197, PHA.  He was also a charter member and Past Grand Knight of Knights of Peter Claver Barrett & Newell #279.  A member of The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, Clarence sang in the gospel choir, drove the bus and managed the church hall.

The oldest of thirteen children, Clarence took his role as the eldest very seriously, often offering guidance and an unbiased opinion that showed he cared.  

A loving husband and father, Clarence leaves to cherish his memory, his darling wife, three children: Trenton Holmes (Amber) of Washington, DC., Carol Holmes-Riddick of Norfolk, VA., and Clarence Holmes Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA., nine grandchildren: Trenton Holmes Jr., Jerrad Holmes, Isaiah Adams, Jasmine Holmes, Jawan Holmes, Jaquan Holmes, Daquan Holmes, Inari Holmes, and Amir Dobbins, and thirteen great grandchildren.   Ten siblings: Theodore Holmes (Linda), Leroy Holmes (Becky), Vivian Vaughan, Mildred Holmes, Calvin Holmes (Sandra), Alvin Holmes (Lillian), Howard Holmes, James Holmes, Lorenzo Holmes, and Iwanda Neal (Raymond).  A host of nieces, nephews, Cuffee and Parker cousins, extended family and friends.
