Cheryl L. Ascencio

Sunrise: August 10, 1959

Sunset: July 3, 2020

Cheryl Lynette Ascencio, known to many as Lynette, was born on August 10th 1959 in Suffolk, Virginia to Bertha (Brown) Artis and Sylvester Thorpe, Jr. She traveled between Virginia and New York during her upbringing. She graduated from Norman Thomas High School in New York, New York in 1977. She went on to start a career in accounting that would take her to multiple places throughout her lifetime.

Lynette was a woman of faith and the light of Jesus showed through her brightly. She loved God and she loved people. More importantly, she loved her family. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and fought a long, hard battle. She never allowed her disease to get the best of her. She continued to live life to the fullest and she continued to be an encouragement to those around her. She mostly enjoyed being surrounded by her loved ones, eating some good food (fried crabs & fried fish especially), and singing/dancing to her favorite music.  She was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, confidant, and friend.  She was preceded in death by her father, Sylvester Thorpe, Jr, her son, C.L. Holmes, Jr.,  and her sister, Ada Thorpe. She is survived by her two children, Quiana Holmes and Quinton Holmes; her husband, Steve Ascencio; her mother, Bertha Artis; her siblings, Marek Brown, Michael Artis (Gloria Artis), Robert S. Thorpe (Lawanda Thorpe), Brenda Thorpe Parrish (Steve Parrish), Sylvia Thorpe Baker (Wayne Baker), and Vertlene Thorpe Bethly; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews,”adopted” children, and family friends. She will forever be missed, but her legacy will live on through her loved ones.

Lynette called me Uncle J, she was a force to be dealt with. She loved God and knew who she belonged to. Knowing the level of her faith makes parting a little easier. She is in a better place, God has called his daughter home, S.I.P my Niece, gone but not forgotten.
