Cheryl Monique Saunders Clay Owens was born on March 10, 1960 to Clyde H. Saunders, Jr. and Juanita Saunders. She was educated in the Portsmouth Public School system. Cheryl had a heart for people, especially children. Her love for children led her to have a successful career as a school bus driver with Chesapeake Public Schools for 25 years.
In July 1982, Cheryl met the love of her life, Darryl E. Owens. Their beautiful courtship resulted in a God blessed union of 37 years. To that union were added two daughters.
The only thing that Cheryl loved more than her family was serving God. Cheryl grew up in Mount Zion Baptist Church and became an active member serving in ministries such as: the Choir, Youth Department and Holiday Program Coordinator, Vacation Bible School teacher, Sunday School teacher, Treasury Department and bus driver.
Her heart for serving the Lord led her to become a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. Cheryl was a faithful member serving as an usher, Sunday School teacher, Youth Coordinator, Finance team member and Vacation Bible School teacher. Even throughout her health challenges, Cheryl continued to be a faithful member of Little Zion Baptist Church until her peaceful transition.
Anyone with whom Cheryl came into contact with was invited to church; from students, co-workers, nurses, family members and friends.
Cheryl heard the loving voice of her savior and accepted His hand on June 6, 2021 joining her mother (Juanita S. Clay), step-father (Rev. Rayphield Clay), brother (Clyde “Sonny” H. Saunders, III) and sister (Terry Saunders). To continue her legacy of faithfulness, Cheryl leaves her husband, Darryl E. Owens. Two daughters of which she was proud, Karen and Juanita Owens. A loving grandson who affectionately called her Nanu, Warren Owens, who was the joy of her life and her grand-dog, Cosmo.
Cheryl peacefully left behind her father Clyde H. Saunders, Jr. and her step-mother, Clementine. Also a dedicated mother-in-love, Fredia W. Burney. Cheryl also leaves behind sisters: Karen Earls (Rev. Dr. Robert Earls), Fern Speight (Clint), Connie Clay, Jackie Harrison (Faheem Salaam), Jeri Saunders-Ratcliff (Shalom) and brothers: Kevin Clay and Raynard Clay. Cheryl lovingly leaves a host of nieces, nephews ,cousins and great-nieces and great-nephews , uncles and aunts. Lastly, Cheryl left behind a host of friends.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Fresenius Kidney Care-North Suffolk location and Sentara Obici Intensive Care Unit staff.
