Catherine Elizabeth Johnson, known affectionately as “Mama,” “Miss Cee,” and “Miss Cat,” 86, went peacefully to be the Lord on Tuesday July 9, 2024. She was a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew her.
Born on February 1, 1938, Catherine was the eldest among her siblings, born to the late Gladys and James Johnson. She grew up in a close-knit family and graduated from Booker T Washington High School before pursuing her passion at Anne’s Beauty Academy.
Catherine dedicated much of her life to caring for others in the nursing field, where her compassion and gentle spirit touched countless lives. Her warm presence brought joy to everyone around her, whether she was enjoying her favorite pastimes like Bingo, chatting with friends from her phonebook, or cherishing moments with her beloved family.
Catherine’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of many. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gladys Collins and James Johnson, her stepfather Joseph Collins Sr, and several siblings: Bertha Brown, Barbara McCall, Joseph Collins Jr (Regina), Josephine Belton, Gladys Nunally (Sterling), and Warren Collins (Edna). Also preceding her in death were her son, Keithe Johnson, and grandson, Keshawn Hawkins.
She is survived by her loving children: son Byron Johnson of Norfolk, daughters Sonya Johnson of Chesapeake, and Netasha Mullen of Virginia Beach. Catherine also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Tovah Johnson of Houston, Cameron Johnson of Virginia Beach, Nyron Garcia of Virginia Beach, Nijah Outlaw of Virginia Beach, as well as her special sons Lawrence Garcia, and Tajuan Douglas of Virginia Beach. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives she enriched with her warmth and affection.
Catherine Elizabeth Johnson’s legacy of love and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
