On September 19, 2024, God whispered, “It’s time” to His daughter, Carroll Darnice Pope Harris. She was born July 6, 1955, to the late William and Iris Pope. She was the eldest of their three children. Carroll grew up knowing who God is and made the choice to follow Him.
Carroll was educated in the Portsmouth School System and graduated from Manor High School in 1973. There, she developed a love for playing the clarinet and singing. She went on in later years to graduate from Kee’s Business College, also in the early 2000s, earned a Bachelor’s in Christian education. Carroll enjoyed people while working as a physical therapy aide for 11 years. She also worked as a security guard for a time. Carroll loved singing in the choir while attending church. At home she enjoyed cross-stitching, making several items for family and friends.
In February 1979, she married Melvin Harris and they were blessed with three children. Melvin was called home to glory in April 2015 after 36 years of marriage. God did not want her to be alone too long, so in November 2018, she married the late Reginald Peele, who was called home in 2021. Carroll was active in several auxiliaries while a member of Holy Light Church of Deliverance and then as a Greater Mount Zion Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C member.
To know Carroll was to love her as she showed to everyone she met. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Melnae Harris, Williams of Portsmouth, and Sheila Yvette) Harris of Houston, TX. Her best friend of 40 plus years Dorcye Tabron. Six grandchildren, Angel (Brian) Frederick, Jakari, Janiel, and Jatorri Wilson, one great-grandson, Ayden Frederick, all of Portsmouth, two sisters, Iris Bynum and Cassandra (Garland) Knight. One aunt Evola Pope. She is preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Adrian Harris, and the loves of her life. We know to be absent from the body is to be with the Lord. Rest on to a beautiful soul!
