Carolyn Jackson

Sunrise: March 6, 1954

Sunset: July 27, 2019

Carolyn was born in Annapolis, Maryland on March 6, 1954 to Charles Edward Chew, Sr. and Mary Alice Williams.  She passed away at home on Saturday, July 27, 2019.  Carolyn was the sixth of 10 brothers and sisters.  At a young age, Carolyn and her family moved from Maryland to Virginia.

Carolyn was always kind, considerate and helpful to everyone she came into contact with. She was full of support and encouragement for all. If she could help you out in any way, she did! You very seldom would find Carolyn feeling down or sad; even during the last several years as she battled her illnesses. She was always in a happy mood and very content. She was funny too.  Her brothers are considered the “jokesters” in the family but Carolyn could always keep up with them.

Carolyn was a very hard worker and she had many talents. She was a wonderful cook but her passion was baking. She loved baking little individual cakes and pies she could give out to family and friends.  Her specialty was cheesecake.  If you ever had her cheesecake, you always came back for more.

Carolyn was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Carolyn loved adventure, change and exploring. Her explorations led her to live in various locations on the East Coast. From Virginia she moved to Georgia, then on to New Jersey, back to Virginia, back to Georgia, then on to Michigan and finally back to Virginia.

Over the years, Carolyn enjoyed various types of employment. She had been employed with the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Norfolk International Terminals, and the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). Upon moving to Atlanta, Georgia in the early 80’s, Carolyn worked for CNN prior to starting her own medical transcription business.  She also was a school bus driver, caterer and bartender for many years.

Carolyn was very good at taking care of people.  Prior to her illness, she was the owner and administrator of an in-home healthcare facility, “Close to Home” and was the administrator for three additional healthcare facilities located in Richmond, Virginia.

Several years ago, a Jehovah’s Witness, Tessa Galarza, knocked on Carolyn’s door and Carolyn started studying the Bible. It was something Carolyn had been familiar with as a child but she had not really looked into what the Bible offered. As an adult, she understood and enjoyed what she was learning. She especially was happy to learn man was not put on the earth only to suffer and die, and the Bible offers a real hope. Carolyn enjoyed what she learned so much she wanted to be baptized and become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her illnesses however, prevented her from achieving baptism before she passed away. But she knew even if she died, Jehovah would remember the love and the relationship she had developed with him.

Carolyn is already missed by everyone who knew her.

Carolyn was predeceased by her son, Marcus A. Chew, her parents Charles E. Chew, Sr., Mary Alice Combs, her step-father, Frank Combs and her youngest brother Frankie Combs.  Carolyn leaves to treasure her memory four sisters, Mary Fallin of Norfolk, Virginia, Barbara Escoe (Joe) of Norfolk, Virginia, Diana Hines of Suffolk, Virginia, Sarah Bond of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four brothers Charles Chew, Jr. (Betty) of Norfolk, Virginia, Gerald Chew of Atlanta, Georgia, Ricki Chew of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Gary Chew (Annette) of Norfolk, Virginia, four aunts, Marguerite Pulley, Arlene Gross, Maggie White and Gloria Brown; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews, and her very close friend and caretaker, Janice Cuffee of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
