On Thursday morning, March 14, 2019, the Lord called his angel, Carolyn D. Baker, to her Heavenly home. Carolyn was born on May 16, 1934 and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. At an early age, she joined First Baptist Church. She was active in Sunday School, the Junior Choir followed by the Young Adult Choir and lastly, the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Mary Mason Missionary Group and the infamous “Voices of Norfolk”. Carolyn met and married Melvin Otis Baker, Sr. having five children, Melvin Otis Baker, Jr., Patricia Ann Baker Kearney, Carole Denise Johnson, Deborah Francine Baker, Stanley Jerod Baker; two step-sons, Calvin and Barbie Baker.
Carolyn attended Norfolk Public Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. In addition to this, Carolyn was also the Salutatorian of her class, having received her bachelor’s degree in Business and Secretarial Science from the Norfolk division
of Virginia State College. Carolyn worked for Norfolk Social Services for 34 years. Upon retirement, some of her favorite past times were listening to gospel music, watching the Norfolk State University Spartan football and basketball teams as well as traveling.
Carolyn was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Kearney and Deborah Baker, grandson, Andrè Kearney, two brothers, Otis Caple, Sr. and Cordell Dickey and two step-sons, Calvin Baker and Barbie Baker. Left to cherish her precious memories are her daughter, Carole D. Johnson (Claud) of Chesapeake, Melvin O. Baker, Jr., of San Diego,
CA and Stanley Baker of Norfolk; grandchildren, Yolanda Williams (Leon) of Virginia Beach, Carmica Green (Lee) of Jacksonville, NC, Jeron Jefferson of Chesapeake, Melanie Baker of New York, NY and Steffon and Morgan Vance both of San Diego, CA; great grandchildren,
MiAiesha Williams, of Maryland, Malek and Yamel Williams both of Virginia Beach, LeSean, Carmen and Carlee Green all of Jacksonville, NC and Jekyia Jefferson of Chesapeake; cousins, Barbara Newsome and family of Tucson, AZ; Nala Bellamy (William) of Frankin; nephew, Otis Caple, Jr., (Sharon); niece, Felicia Hodge (Ronald) of Durham, NC, Renee Eure, Johnny Eure, Shawntil and family of Maryland; Shawn Wilson, Dennis and family of Chesapeake, adopted family members, Janie Ward (Charles); Rosa Edwards (Casey), Beverly Edwards and Glinda Edwards and a host of other relatives and friends. Our mother was a wonderful, soft spoken women who loved the Lord with her whole heart. She will truly be missed.
