Early, Sunday morning, May 30, 2021, our God sent forth his powerful angel to accompany his dedicated servant, and our beloved, Carolyn Philpot Hines, from this time and place to his eternal realm. Carolyn was born to the late Holbert Leon Philpot and Margaret Ann Jones on Thursday, August 11, 1949 in Conroe, Texas. Upon the untimely death of her father in 1952, Carolyn returned to Norfolk, Virginia with her late mother, Margaret.
Carolyn received her education in the public schools of Norfolk. She completed studies at Norfolk’s Kee’s Business College, where she mastered typing, shorthand, stenography, along with a wide spectrum of office and business procedures. As a young woman, Carolyn was trained and employed as a telephone operator, and received commendations for her excellent work in this field. She later worked in retail at various business establishments in the Tidewater area. Carolyn also enjoyed sewing, as it was relaxing for her; her enjoyed it immensely. Although Carolyn offered homecare services for many children and their parents, her chief occupation was that of a homemaker.
At an early age, Carolyn confessed Christ and was baptized into Zion Light Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Norfolk, by her maternal grandfather and founder of the church, Reverend John Thomas Jones. During this time, she was particularly enthusiastic and greatly involved in the Sunday School Ministry of the church. Later, as an older teenager, and with her mother’s permission, she became a member of the Saint Mary’s Holy Deliverance, and was deeply influenced by the leadership of its pastor, the late Mother Juanita Jones, an extraordinary woman of God whom Carolyn greatly admired and respected. At St. Mary’s, Carolyn directed the Youth Choir and was committed to other ministries in the church. Carolyn, although a young lady, was truly serious about holiness and God’s work with him in a mission church for a while. Carolyn, Glover, and their children were also affiliated with the Norfolk Deliverance Church, under the leadership of Bishop Jermone James and Prophetess Keesha James. Carolyn loved her church, her pastors, and congregation. At Healing Word Church, Carolyn was a prayer intercessor, choir member, and she served, with distinction, as amour-bearer to Prophetess Keesha James. Carolyn loved her church, her pastors, and congregation. At Healing Word Church, James. Carolyn has always been involved in worship in “fiery, deeply immersed, demonstrative, and electrifying manner” as she regularly praised God in the dance and in whatever manner that the Holy Spirit le her. Carolyn was also a loving mother figure in her church.
Carolyn will be remembered as a deeply devoted and loving wife (of fifty-one years), mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, niece, loyal friend, and mother to all, who along with her husband, has opened her home to many adults and youth who needed their loved and kindness; and they joyfully performed this loved and personal ministry numerous times throughout the years. As the mother of six children who were involved in sports and cheerleading among other activities, Carolyn has nurtured and loved countless youth and parents of her community. She was deeply loved and appreciated by her community and beyond.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents; her oldest grandson, Daruis, whom she raised. She is survived by her beloved husband, Minister Glover Hines; four sons, Carlton, Danielle, Brian, and Erik; two daughters, Kirsten and Ebony; two brothers, Ronald and Michael; a special sister-in-love, Joyce; twenty-two grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one nephew; two nieces; cousins; a special goddaughter, Sabrina Sanders; two special, lifelong friends, Bertha Jones and Carolyn Thomas; best friend, Michele Taylor and Barbara Parker.
We are walking in the Peace of Christ as we are assured that our beloved Carolyn is more alive than ever before as she is praising at the feet of Jesus!
