Carol Laverne Elliott King

Sunrise: July 29, 1949

Sunset: August 22, 2022

Carol LaVerne Elliott King was born in Portsmouth, VA on July 29, 1949 to Florence H. Brewer and Vernon Elliott, Though her
parents divorced when she was a toddler, she would be raised by William H. “Daddy Brewer.” She was the apple of her maternal
grandparents’ eyes.

She gave her life to Christ at the age of six and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church. As a young girl, she learned to play the piano, was involved in the Girl Scouts and a Jewel at chureh. In 1966, she participated in the Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter, Delia Sigma Theta Sorority, Ine’s Jabberwock. Carol was educated in Portsmouth Public School and was a proud member of the I.C. Norcom Greyhounds Band, where she graduated in 1967.

Carol married the love of her life, Joe W. King, Jr. and from that union came two sons, Joe W. King, III and Ennis C. King (who died from sudden infant death syndrome). Ever the caregiver, she graduated from the Portsmouth Practical Nursing School and began her nursing career at Portsmouth General Hospital and later the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She received numerous service recognitions during her career.

With a thirst for education, she went on to obtain an Associate Degree from Tidewater Community College; Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Norfolk State University; a Certificate-Undergraduate/Post Degree from Union Christian Bible Institute,

She was active in the Red Hatters and was a Medical Officer with the Virginia Defense Force where she held the rank of Captain.

Quiet by nature, yet powerful by action she was appointed by former Virginia Governor George Allen and reappointed by Governor James Gilmore to the Board of Nursing. She later received an appointment by Governor Mark R. Warner to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission. Her love for older adults led her to be an advocate in the aging field. Carol believed that seniors should have access to quality adult day programs and she went about setting one up. At one point she even had her own mother attending the program she initiated.

She served on the Board of the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and received a Certificate of Appreciation as an Outstanding Volunteer. She advocated not only before the Virginia General Assembly, but also before members of Congress in Washington, DC. Sadly, after caring for those with the disease, she would develop it herself. Her son, Joe, would dutifully step up and take care of his mother the last five years of her life and began to refer to her as “Jitterbug.” He took excellent care of his Jitterbug too.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Joe W. King, III; sisters, Demetra Brewer Darlington (Jerome), Miriam L. Brewer; grandsons, Dontre’ J. King and Jayden E. King; granddaughter, Terena Martin Johnson (Jessica), and great-granddaughter, Keyari Harris-King; and a host of other relatives and friends.
