Carlton Leroi Jones, Jr., affectionately known by most as “CJ”, transitioned from this life on October 8th, 2022, at his home in Statesville, North Carolina. CJ was born to Jeanette Hailes Jones and Carlton L. Jones, Sr. on December 14, 1973, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was the apple of his father and sister’s eye but especially his mother’s.
During CJ’s youth, he attended Chesapeake Public Schools and Greenbrier Christian Academy. In 1992, he earned his high school diploma. He was led to Christ by his grandmother’s prayer band on a summer Tuesday morning at Greater Bethel A.M.E prayer service. A few weeks later the late Rev. Ajax Scott, Sr. baptized CJ at his grandfather’s church, New Light Baptist Church. He became a member of Greater Bethel under the leadership of the late C.C Richburg and Class #1 led by his late great uncle Anderson Cuffee. As a member of Greater Bethel CJ was active in the youth choir, and the youth and male usher boards.
14 years ago, CJ took a leap of faith and ventured from his home state of Virginia to Mobile, Alabama. He eventually settled in Statesville, North Carolina, where the light of his life, A’jyria “AJ” Jones-Mickles was born to within the marital union shared with Yasmond Mickles.
CJ was quiet, funny and wise beyond his years. He had a strong work ethic and commitment. CJ was a Machine Operator for Plastiflex North Carolina, LLC and consistently maintained part time employment within the food industry as a cook, most recently for IHOP and Waffle House. CJ’s part time employment supported his passion for cooking- a talent and skill he learned and gained from his dear mother. His array of omelets were mouthwatering. CJ, and his culinary skills, will be greatly missed.
He was predeceased in death by his beloved parents Carlton and Jeanette Jones. He leaves the following loved ones to treasure special memories: his only child A’jyria “AJ” Jones-Mickles of Statesville, NC; his big sister and fearless protector Melody Chesson Clemmons (Tracy) Suffolk, VA; devoted finance Ashely Mariah Irvin Statesville, NC; nephews Tracy “LT” Chesson, Ronnie and DeAngelo Ward all of Suffolk, VA; niece Kayla Clemons Suffolk, VA; Aunts Brenda Jones Johnson of Portsmouth, VA, Hattie (Penny) Hailes Chambers of New York City, Evelyn Jones Pearson of Hampton, VA; Uncles Donnie F. Hailes of Chesapeake, VA, Calvin Jones of Portsmouth, VA, Maurice E. Valentine of Virginia Beach, VA and Willie Cary Jones of Norfolk, VA .
CJ also leaves lasting memories of a special cousin Michael C. Hailes who he considered his brother and honorary niece Brenda Cook, along with many, many cousins and close friends.

CJ was like a little brother to me
In his much younger days. We lost touch but I often thought about him. My mom, Marie McDonald, used to watch CJ after school. He will be missed by the McDonald family.
