Carl E. Dyson, Sr.

Sunrise: April 1, 1929

Sunset: December 28, 2018

On the afternoon of December 28, 2018, Carl Eugene Dyson, Sr., 89 years of age, heard the voice of Jesus calling him away from this life to be in His presence eternally. By faith in his Savior, he peacefully slipped away in his sleep while napping at the Norfolk Healthcare Nursing Home in Norfolk.

Carl Sr. was born on April 1, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia to Taylor Dyson and Isabelle Green. He was the youngest of four children of that union. He is survived by two sisters: Mildred Dyson Jackson and Velma Dyson Gilliam. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Dyson. Isabelle Dyson passed away when Carl Sr. was an infant. She was one of 10 siblings, 7 sisters and 2 brothers. Isabelle’s siblings stepped in to raise her children. Carl Sr. was raised by his aunt, Susie Green Custis and uncle, Joseph Custis. Educated in the Norfolk School system, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Carl Sr. loved listening to The Harmonizing Four, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, The Gospel Four, and The Mills Brothers. He founded and organized a singing group called The Harmoneers, and once performed on a New York television show. Carl Sr. was a seeker of knowledge and truth. He read books wrapped in paper bag covers so that no one would know what he was studying. He enjoyed engaging in conversations about what he had learned. He retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad in his early years, and later, from the Maritime Merchant Seamen.

He is predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Gertrude Brown Dyson and her son, Reginald Brown. He is survived by his wife’s daughter, Bolivia Brown; her son, Angelo Bryant (Vandilla) and daughters; cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Carl Sr. had 10 natural children from a previous marriage. He is predeceased by the fifth born, Carla Eugenia Dyson. He is survived by Carolyn Dyson Jackson  (Marvin), Thomasine Dyson Williams (Robert), Debra Dyson Taylor (Charles), Phyllis Dyson,  Carl Dyson Jr., Carlos Dyson, Denise Dyson Martin, Veda Dyson, Derek Dyson, grandchildren, and a host of relatives from this family.

He was an extraordinary man and left a legacy to be cherished by an ever growing family, and memories so special that family and friends will smile the rest of their lives.

Oh, Daddy, how I miss you!!! I’m having a hard time accepting that you are gone. What helps me, though, is knowing that you are walking and talking again in the presence of Our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ! I could tell from the joyful look on your face, after you had slipped away, that you beheld more than your mind or heart could have ever expected!! I look forward to my turn and how we will rejoice before Our King together!! I love you forever. ??
