Bridie Rodgers Stokes, born on April 10, 1927, departed this earthly life surrounded by family into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 11, 2020.
She was one of twelve children born to the late Robert Rodgers, Sr. and Armecia Boone Rodgers of Norfolk County, which is now known as the City of Norfolk. She was educated in the Norfolk Public School System and she also retired from Norfolk Public Schools after working for over 20 faithful years.
Bridie met the love of her life, soulmate, and companion Samuel Lee Stokes and they were married on December 27, 1948. They made their home in the Berkley section of Norfolk and later relocated to Park Place where they raised their five children.
Our mother had a very sweet and kind spirit and to know her, was to love her. She loved attending cookouts and family reunions, sitting on the front porch doing her crossword puzzles and singing the gospels of Mahalia Jackson. “Bridie Bell”, as she was affectionately called by her late husband also loved sports. She was a Dallas Cowboys fan and her husband was a Washington Redskins fan, and you could often hear them playfully mouthing back and forth about whose team was the best. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, Missionary, and Usher until she took ill and was no longer able to attend.
Bridie was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L. Stokes, her daughter Arleen Stokes-Taylor; and nine of her siblings. Left to cherish her memories are her four children, Linwood Stokes (Brenda), Sandra Spriggs, Armecia Louise Stokes, and Thomas Leon Stokes; her two siblings Gladys Jones and Dorothy Rodgers; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
