Brenda D. Ruffin-Staton

Sunrise: May 14, 1954

Sunset: September 12, 2020

Brenda Denise Ruffin-Staton, affectionately called Ne-Ne, departed from earth and all its toiling on September 12, 2020. She was born May 14, 1954 in Norfolk, VA to the late Willie Lee Shelton and Mary F. Shelton Griffin. Ne-Ne attended Norfolk Public Schools and was a graduate of Granby High School. After High School she received certifications in the medical field which she utilized working at Norfolk General Hospital. For many years Brenda worked in their Labor and Delivery Department.

One attribute to admire of Ne-Ne was her love of learning. She decided to go back to school later in life and earned an Associate Degree from Tidewater Community College. She continued setting goals and advancing her education and went on to graduate with a B.S. Degree from Norfolk State University. Never one to have her thirst for knowledge quenched Ne-Ne continued to take courses on the Graduate level.

Brenda loved many things from children, to sports, to reading. These loves weren’t just stated, but demonstrated by her actions. Aside from her textbooks she always had a novel with her that she might pull out and read anywhere. She combined her love of children and sports dedicating many years of her life to coaching the youth. Ne-Ne was a girls’ basketball coach and an assistant football coach for Pop Warner in the Park Place Community. She never met a child she could not try to help. Ne-Ne loved her family fiercely and her friends dearly. She looked pass your faults and saw the good in everybody. She thanklessly provided for many people when they were unable to provide for themselves. Ne-Ne was quiet and easy-going. She was kind, generous and one to rarely say no to people. Yet she was very strong willed. Ne-Ne had a love for dogs. She also loved writing poetry. She wrote volumes of poems which she often gave to her family.

Ne-Ne is predeceased by two sisters, Viola Clark and Corinne Paschall. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Ernest Staton; their “special son”, Daniel; her adopted grandson, Yanell Freeman; four brothers, James Shelton, William Shelton (Mildred), Keith Shelton (Linda), and Earl Shelton; four sisters, Karolee Smallwood, Felicia
Shelton, Melita Stephens and Nicole Green; brother-in-law, Robert Clark, Sr., many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
