Bettie Mae Hawkins was born in Halifax, North Carolina on May 14, 1931, to the late Gennie and Edna Silver. She departed this life on January 4, 2024. She was the oldest of six siblings. At an early age, she attended Pine Chapel Baptist Church, where she was introduced to Christ. She attended Eastman High School in Enfield, North Carolina and united in holy matrimony to the late Lawrence Hawkins for 38 years. She was blessed to have nine beautiful children. Bettie was a devoted and loving wife, compassionate and self-less mother and lovable grandmother and great grandmother. She attended Garden of Prayer on Park Avenue in 1963 and then moved to 1000 East 26th Street and remained under the leadership of Bishop Levi Willis II. She has held several positions in the church such as usher, finance worker, treasurer, member of the mother board, as well as the hospitality board while being a member of the church.
She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Denise Lindsey (Freddie) of Norfolk, VA, Evelyn “Fay” Johnson (Warren) of Norfolk, VA, Sandra “Kay” Hawkins of Norfolk, VA; four sons, Julius Hawkins (Deborah) of Virginia Beach, VA, Alonzo Hawkins (Diane) of Chesapeake, VA, Darrell Hawkins, Sr. (Annette) of Chesapeake, VA, Lawrence Hawkins Sr. (Yvonne) of Portsmouth, VA. One sister, Lodena Richardson, of Enfield, North Carolina; two brothers, Willis Silver, of Nash County, North Carolina, and Roark Silver, of Macon, North Carolina. One sister-in-law Reatha Henderson and one brother-in-law Charles Bowser both from New Jersey. Eighteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and her longtime friend Joyce Bembery.

January 10, 2024 at 7:46 amThe only reason we feel such profound loss is because we had such a profound blessing.
How sad we are now, but how fortunate we are still to have all the stories and experiences
and memories we shared. Let us find peace in the past to carry our hearts forward.
With Deepest Sympathy

January 13, 2024 at 2:56 pmI’m saddened to hear of the loss of my other mother, only now a week later did I hear of her passing. She was a very wonderful and great woman who extended her love to a motherless boy helping to guide me into adulthood, and I’m very thankful for her presence in my life . I will always remember and cherish our relationship, your (6) sixth son Kent
