On September 10, 2023, our beloved Bessie Emily Hill-Walker peacefully departed from this world, surrounded by her cherished family, after courageously battling a prolonged illness.
Born to the late Hettie Angelica Hill, Bessie‘s journey began in the quaint town of Columbia, North Carolina, where she attended Columbia High School. Her life significantly turned when she relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, in 1951. In Norfolk, she encountered the love of her life, Lawrence L. Walker. In 2016, Bessie made a heartfelt move to Georgia to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter.
Bessie‘s dedication and commitment were exemplified by her remarkable career at Norfolk General Hospital, where she faithfully served for 26 years, retiring with honor in 1996.
Bessie‘s life was marked by profound loss, as she was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence L. Walker, after 32 years of shared love and companionship, her mother, Hettie Angelica Hill, and her beloved son, James (Jimmy) C. Hill.
A woman of immense warmth and compassion, Bessie was the epitome of a true friend, always there to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her deep faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was evident to all who knew her. Bessie was a devoted member of the Bethlehem Church of Christ for many years, where she found solace, strength, and community.
Bessie‘s zest for life was infectious, and she welcomed every moment and every person with open arms. In her well-deserved retirement, she cherished her time spent with her dearest friend and longtime companion, Jackson Bennett, and treasured moments with her loving family.
Bessie Emily Hill-Walker leaves a legacy of love, faith, and kindness that will inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to have known her. She now rests in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones in the presence of her Lord.
Bessie Emily Hill-Walker is survived by her loving family, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Her survivors include:
– Her devoted daughter, Cassandra A. Walker of Ellenwood, Georgia
– Her son, Steve Walke (Patricia d.) of Virginia Beach, VA
– Grandchildren: Katrina Staten, Mark Hill (Tina), Monique Hill, Sarita Walke, Tia Walke, Steven Walke Jr. (LaChristin), Marquis Walke (Nancy), Megan Painter, and Alexandra Walker
– Fifteen great-grandchildren
– Five great-great-grandchildren
Bessie‘s legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured and loved; her family will continue to honor her spirit and the values she holds dear. Their bond remains unbroken, even in her absence as they remember the love and wisdom she shared with them throughout her remarkable life.
Bessie‘s passing leaves an immense void in the hearts of her family, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. After the memorial service, Bessie Emily Hill-Walker will rest at Roosevelt Memorial Park Cemetery in Chesapeake, VA, alongside her beloved husband, Lawrence L. Walker. This final act of love and respect will provide a peaceful and eternal resting place where family and friends can visit, share memories, and reflect upon her legacy. Your presence at the burial is welcome and cherished as we come together to bid our last farewells and pay tribute to a life filled with love and meaning.
