For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

On Wednesday, January 25,2023, Beryl Melcina Overby Howcott transitioned into eternal rest.

She was gently lifted from our midst during a very brief hospital visit in North Carolina.

Beryl was the beloved youngest daughter and child born to the late Judge Thomas Eliston Overby,Sr. and Sallie Smith Overby. Beryl, “Lil Beryl’’, as she is affectionately called by some family and friends, was born on October 12, 1943.

She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA. and then matriculated at Norfolk State University where she received her Degree in Elementary Education.

In her quest for higher education, she completed Teacher Core, in San Diego, California.

It was only natural that Beryl would embark upon a career in education, as she had a longtime passion even as a little girl to teach her friends how to read.

She then became an Elementary School Teacher for the Norfolk Public School System and eventually a longtime Government Employee for the Navy Environmental Health Center for more than 25 years upon her retirement.

After her retirement she worked for the International Black Women’s Congress (IBWC) as an outreach worker.

Beryl was a longtime member of Mount Zion Baptist Church since an early age. She served on the Moses Reid Usher Board and sang with the Voices of Mount Zion and Gospel Choir.

Beryl was genuine, loving, kind, selfless, compassionate, sincere, humble and most of all a God-fearing woman. She holds such a special place in the hearts and minds of others because she genuinely cared and was sensitive to whatever the plight. Whenever needed, she always had words of encouragement. She had a passion for writing and would often take the time to create a heartfelt poem to celebrate and uplift. Oh, and what a joy it was to see her smile and to hear her laughter! She was a precious gift and our lives have been truly blessed because of her.

Beryl leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, three children, Rhonda Overby, Stacy Overby, Thomas Howcott, a granddaughter, Joi Overby Haskins and brother, Joseph Gerald Overby.

Beryl is predeceased by a sister, Janice Overby Darden, brothers, Wilbert Overby, Judge Thomas Eliston Overby, Jr. (June), and Oscar Darryl Overby.

She is also predeceased by a loving aunt, Beryl O. Downing and uncle, Horace C. Downing whose daughter, she was too.

In addition, she was predeceased by other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She also leaves to mourn nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.
