On January 13, 1934, in Bayboro, South Carolina, Beatrice Goff was born to Lorenzo C. Goff and Essie Johnson Goff. Beatrice, lovingly known as Bea, dedicated her life to God at an early age and joined New Bethel AME Church.
As a young adult, Bea migrated to Norfolk, Virginia to live with her Aunt Beatrice Evans, where she attended Booker T. Washington Trade School. She soon after entered into Holy Matrimony to the late Matthew Bowen Sr. Bea started her career at Naval Station Norfolk Supply Center in Norfolk, Virginia as a logistics clerk and continued until
her retirement. She personally assisted in the sustainment of operational readiness of the US Navy during war and peace time.
Bea was a devoted member of the First Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, where she served for over 50 years on the second usher board and the Women’s Guild. She was a very proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star; and a member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the National Association of Advancement for Colored People (NAACP). At home Bea loved, baking, gardening and extending love to everyone she came in contact with.
On Friday, May 15, 2020 God’s angels opened the Heavenly Gates to receive our beloved Beatrice G. Bowen. Surviving to cherish and emulate her beautiful life, her sister Betty Moody of Bayboro, SC; three sons Matthew Bowen Jr. of Newport News, VA, Deacon Christopher Bowen (Shelia) of Fayetteville, NC, Kennedy Bowen (Desney) of Waldorf, MD; one daughter Stephanie Watson (Edgar) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; (10) grandchildren Kim Fields, Quinell Watson, Christopher Bowen Jr., Cierra Bowen, Nelson Bowen, Khalil Watson, Aaron Bowen, Samuel Bowen, Briana Bowen, and Bryan Bowen; (4) great grandchildren Alexis Torres, Shawn Campbell Jr., Zoe Watson, and Ace Bowen; a host of nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.
