Barthenia B. Askew

Barthenia Barbara Askew, affectionately known as Bart, passed away peacefully on January 29th. She spent her final days at home with her family.

Born in Weldon, North Carolina, Barthenia was the only child of Frank and Queen Esther Gatlin (née Hunt). She was the mother of Karen McKinney, the late Christopher Reddick, and Stephanie (Johnnie) Middleton.

A lover of the Lord, Barthenia was baptized at Union Baptist Church and served as a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Bart was a graduate of Princess Anne County Training School, and received her BA from Norfolk State University and her Masters from Hampton University.

Starting her career in technology, she worked as a System Engineer for Wang Laboratories and Chesapeake City Public Schools, where she retired in 2010. She also retired from the United States Navy Reserves, serving our country for 22 years.

Bart was known to have an adventurous spirit. Her lifetime travels led her both near and abroad. Bart’s most memorable travels include skiing in Aspen, and riding elephants in South Africa.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen and Stephanie; her grandchildren, Aaron, Ashton, Tamara (Alix), and Micaela; and her great children, Christian, Evan, and Zoey.

    Our hearts were sadden when we heard of the passing of your mother. Please know that although we are here for you, no one can stick to you closer than a friend like Jesus Christ. Remember that he can, will and is ready to heal you everywhere you and your family hurt, for as long as you hurt.
