Barbara Marie Alston

Sunrise: March 14, 1947

Sunset: October 22, 2024

On Tuesday afternoon, October 22, 2024, our Heavenly Father was walking through His garden, and He picked that perfect flower; He chose our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Barbara Marie Alston.

Barbara Marie Alston was born in Norfolk, VA on March 14, 1947, to the late Thomas Owens and Lillian Eaton.  She was one of eight children.

Barbara was a devoted and faithful believer of Christ.   She was a woman of God who loved to praise and worship Him at any time.  She served in Gates of Heaven Church for over 33 years, under the leadership of Apostle Melvin Stackhouse and First Lady Elaine Stackhouse, being a dedicated tither.  She served as Deaconess, an usher, and choir member over the years.   Barbara was the first Mother of the church for over 20 years where she offered words of wisdom, a smile, and a hug to all who attended.

Barbara was a dedicated wife and mother who was always there for her family, offering support and love.    Her legacy of kindness, encouragement, and strength as a grandmother and great grandmother will be cherished forever.   As a sister, her love was true and unchanging.  As a friend, she was known for her fun-loving personality, generosity and her love for dancing.

Being a blessed woman loyal to her beliefs, she impacted all whom she met throughout her life and the community.  Her heart of gold enabled her to give a smile, words of wisdom and the love of God to family, friends and coworkers.

For 20 years, Barbara was a Child Care Specialist at the YMCA where she retired. Her love for childcare did not end when she retired as she continued childcare within her home.

Barbara made her transition on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with her family members at her side.  She leaves to cherish her memories two loving daughters:  Shenna Eaton (Darrwin) of Norfolk, VA and Tonya Eaton of Norfolk, VA; one loving son:  Brack Alston, Jr. (Ruby) of Norfolk, VA; three sisters:  Harriet Harris of Jersey City, NJ, Carolyn Eaton of Norfolk, VA, Gwendolyn Dozier (Ronald) of Suffolk, VA; one brother:  Tony Eaton (Emma) of Suffolk, VA. She also leaves nineteen grandchildren:  Marque Eaton (Kenyata), Maquell Lewis, Montaye Lewis, Maliqua Lewis, Nicholas Holloway, Shervetta James (Terrance), Tonard Eaton (Valencia), Rolleequa Bolling, Jeffery Crews Jr, Darren Monroe, Shakemma Saunders, Brittany Saunders, Tandra Jones, Latoya Jones, Zakai Jones, Rafael Jones, Devon Jones, Shadonya Jones, and Antonio Jones; twenty-seven great grandchildren; one special friend Louise Wright of Norfolk, VA, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by the love of her life Brack Alston, Sr.; one daughter: Virginia Jones (Hope); one sister: Deborah Burks; and two brothers: Thomas Eaton, Jr., and Anthony Eaton; and two sisters-in-law.
