Barbara M. Blount

Barbara M. Blount was born January 9, 1936. She is the daughter of the late Marie and Harvey L. Bell Sr. She started in church at the age of 3. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Pianist, Sunday School Teacher and an usher. She graduated from Booker T. Washington in January 1953 and attended Norfolk State College.

Barbara married Norman in 1957. Barbara traveled with her husband who was in the US Army. As traveling was one of her passions, Barbara went everywhere she could go with Norman. Even after he retired, they continued to travel. Barbara has traveled to twelve foreign countries. Her most memorable was Jerusalem, Switzerland and Germany. After returning to Virginia, Barbara joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board and taught Sunday School. She was a member of Total Life Christian Center and served on the Hostess Ministry, Discipleship Ministry and Sunday Morning Word Quest. She taught with Foster Bible Study Group for 29 years, where she had been a member since 1983. At the time of her passing, she was a member of First Baptist South Hill. She loved her church and pastor. Barbara loved the Lord with all her heart!

She retired from the Naval Supply Center as a Purchasing Agent after working 25 years in civil service. After retirement, Barbara went to Bible Teachers Institute and graduated from Antioch College with an Associates Degree in Bible Studies. Barbara enjoyed life and loved people.

She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Norman Blount Sr.; her son, Antonio J. Blount and a brother, Harvey Bell Jr. and a sister, Arlethia Horton. She leaves to cherish her memories, brother, Wallace Bell (Zelene); three sisters, Iris Walden, Sheila Hawkins and Carolyn Beckett; four children, Dewitt T. Blount, Sylvia B. Clemons (Emanuel), Norman L. Blount Jr. and Jacqueline K. Blount; three grandchildren, Natika S. Blount (Alvin), Jamon
L. Tolbert and Antonio L. Brown; one great grandchild, Averi J. Dussette and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

    Heart broken to learn of this loving woman’s passing. When I worked at the Naval Supply Center in Regional Contracting,Mrs.Blount took me under her wings. Lord knows someone had to. And she chose to. I will always be thankful for the love and concern and nurturing and prayers that she always gave me. Her encouragement enabled me to press towards the greatnesses within me then and now. May God comfort and strengthen you during this most difficult journey. God bless you.

    Dear Sylvia and family…Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of “Miss Barbara”, as I always remember referring to her as. I will also forever remember her strength, her patience, her balance, her joy for the Lord, and her welcoming spirit. As a young girl growing up, she is etched in my heart as a wonderful loving person. I’m happy to have known her, and truly believe that her indelible spirit shall live on forever.. in the most high…as a beautiful angel at perfect peace. ❤️
