Barbara A. Peoples

Barbara Ann Peoples was born August 1, 1943 in Portsmouth, Virginia.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep March 12, 2023.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-love and friend.  She was predeceased by her parents Annie McNeal, James McNeal and Robert (Luke) Hawkins, Sr.,

Barbara was very spiritual and loved the Lord, she dedicated her life to Christ at a young age.  She  attended Garden of Prayer #4 C.O.G.I.C, in Portsmouth, Virginia where she was a Church Mother. Prior to her failing health, she was a dedicated member, and a member of the Senior Choir.  She loved singing gospel songs and could be found at choir rehearsal and other church functions regularly.

Barbara worked briefly at General Electric and left to pursue her dreams of being a Beautician.  She owned her own Beauty School on the corner of Effingham Street and County Street .  She retired to become a homemaker to raise her children.  Barbara was a foster mother for the City of Portsmouth for many years.  

Barbara was an avid gardener, she LOVED flowers and working in her yard.  She was a great cook and along with her husband hosted annual cook-outs inviting family, friends and her church family.  She was known for her bread pudding, rolls and dressing.  There was not much that she could not cook.  She enjoyed her lunch dates with her daughter and cooking Sunday dinners for her family.

Barbara was feisty and very stylish, she loved her big hats and matching outfits.  Her favorite TV shows were the westerns, martial arts and horror movies.  She was a pet lover and owned many dogs over the years, at her passing she owned a yorkie named Arlo, who will miss her.

Barbara will be sorely missed and leaves to cherish her memory her loving and loyal husband of 63 years Ralph R. Peoples, sons Anthony Peoples (Elaine), Jason Peoples, Mark Chatmon (Khadijah), Marcus Chatmon, Marquis Chatmon (Sherry).  Dedicated and Devoted Daughter Angela (Hicks) Peoples-Vincent (Craig Sr.) Grand Children Candyce Burnett, Eric Jordan, Maigan Peoples, Dontae Edwards, Madison Small, Sherita Collins, Craig Vincent, Jr(Imani), Brianna Chatmon, Cameron Chatmon, Jasmine Chatmon, Rhyan Chatmon, Nasir Chatmon, Jamari Chatmon and Kannon Chatmon. Great-Great Grands Josiah, Kyndal, Laila, Derrick, Khamiya, and Mariah.  Sisters Maxine Evans, Betty Robinson, Carolyn Bragg-Wilder, Cynthia Darden, Donia Eley and Tenia Johnson.  Brothers James McNeal Jr., and Joseph Hawkins, Sister-in-Love Edna Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews, bonus sons and daughters.  

 She was predeceased by her son Juan Peoples, brothers Robert Hawkins Jr, Donald Hawkins and Floyd Hawkins.
